Ellis Appointed Grand Prelate
?I have been appointed gra"d prelate

term of the deceased Dr. Mance.' I
im taking this method here to tell
vhy I-^vas appointed arfri to show that
ny appointment was not an act of
partiality on the part of our noble
rnd esteemed grai^l head. The late
Dr. Mance and I were very dear
["riends. I visited him in his afflictions
sven to the last night of his death.
For over five years he would confer
with me in arranging the-memorial
pretty well familiar with his desires
along that lffie. And as the time had
arrived when he arid I usually mapped
out our program. He was still too
sick 10 be approached with the subject.
I jisked the grand chancellor to permit
me to go ahead with Dr. Mance's
work for. him and in case that his
illness wtfuTcT prevefff his beii^g present
at the grand lodge session his
worn \vouici oe reaay and the body not

consented; "Neither of us anticipated
the death of the grand_prelate
befurc the session of the grand
lodge. Hence we were oi|ly looking
forward to the taking care of his
work so that he could be unanimously
re-elected on his sick bed. It was
Mance's interest and not his place that
prompted my-actions. And aftfer^ 1
had gone forward with the arrangement
of the program- for him, the
end came to our sad regret, then the
frrand Chancellor assigned me the
place. True e^dngh others wanted
Mance's place alter his death but was
not at ail interested in arranging his
work foi liini dm ing his tttrressr Think
