THE YOUNG WIFE; OB, THE SHADOWS WE CAST A young wife had busied herself for many days in preparing n pleasant surpiise for bor husband. The woik was finit-hed at last, and now she awaited his return, with a heart full of war.?i emotions. A dressing gowD and pair of elegantly embroidered (dippers, wrought by her own (dtillfui fingers, were the gifts with which she meant to delight him. What a tronp of pleasant fancies was in her heart! How almost impatiently did she wait for the coming twilight, which was to dawn, j not anoroachinf* daiknos* to h??r At last, shqgjpeard tho slop of her liu* j band in tho passage, and lior pulse leaped with fluttering delight. Like a bird upon the wing, 6he almost flew down to meet liim, impatient for the salutation that awaited her. To men in tlio world of businns, few days pass without tlieir disappointments and preplexitics. It is men's business to boar these in a manly spirit. They form bnt a portion of life's discipline, and should make them stronger, braver, and more enduring. Unwisely and wo may sa}- tin justly, too, many men, fail to leave tlifit business cares and troubles in their work tdiops or counting houses, at the day's do nine, iney wrap them in bundles, audi carry them home to shadow their hoiist* hold. It was so with the young hiuband 01 this particular occasion. The stream of business had taken an eddying whirl, and thrown his vessel backwards, instead of onwards, for a brief space ; and, though it was still in the current, and gliding safely onward again. The jar and disappointment had fretted his mind severely. There was no heart warmth in the ki-s he gave hiwife, uot because lore had failed in any degree, but because he had let rare over shadow love. lie drew his arms around h pr 111 l lull n TV tic / nnci-i/Mie ..f /liinlrktil....! ! v %# UM.Iil.lClMAI \ pressure in that embracing arm. He looked nt her soberly as she came forward. "What are these t" he asked, almost coldly, repressing surprise, and affecting an ignorance that he did not feel in regard to the beautifid present she held in her hands. They are for you, dear," was the reply# > "I made them." "For me ?" lie exclaimed : "nonsense ! what do I want with such jimcraikery ? This is woman's wear. Your husband is too much of a man to robo himself in gay ? colors, like a olown or an-actor." And he waived his hand with an air of contempt.
