THE SHADOWS WE CAST
A young wife had busied herself for
many days in preparing n pleasant surpiise
for bor husband. The woik was finit-hed
at last, and now she awaited his return,
with a heart full of war.?i emotions. A
dressing gowD and pair of elegantly embroidered
(dippers, wrought by her own
(dtillfui fingers, were the gifts with which
she meant to delight him. What a tronp
of pleasant fancies was in her heart!
How almost impatiently did she wait
for the coming twilight, which was to dawn, j

band in tho passage, and lior pulse leaped
with fluttering delight. Like a bird upon
the wing, 6he almost flew down to meet liim,
impatient for the salutation that awaited
her.
To men in tlio world of businns, few days
pass without tlieir disappointments and
preplexitics. It is men's business to boar
these in a manly spirit. They form bnt
a portion of life's discipline, and should
make them stronger, braver, and more enduring.
Unwisely and wo may sa}- tin
justly, too, many men, fail to leave tlifit
business cares and troubles in their work

had fretted his mind severely. There

a single bound to the unpleasant events of
the day, and the waters of his life were
