The cotton crop is short. I see in some places it is about all picked out, but the corn, peas, cane, potatoes and all vegetable crops are sure fine. I have never seen as much interest manifested by the farmers in raising food stuff. It is asserted that there has been one-third more food stuff raised this year than has ever been raised before. The hogs for killing are fattening fast . Every one seems to have a pen hog. T % * Af .. T T? II I i nun ai mi. u. i. Harris nume today and he showed me around. He has four as fine killing hogs as I have seen anywhere. He showed me a fine young mule three years old, also a fine young mare four years old, and Mr. Harris showed me one of the oldest of the horse kind?a gray that was 82 years old, and he showed me something peculiar, looking in the mouth of this animal, her lips gad gone in on each side of her mouth, so that she couldn'teat good, or couldn't chew her food ona ccount of chewing down on her lips, hut this horse was in very good shape?wasn't poor by any means. Mr. Harris is one of Union county's progressive farmers. Makes everything he needs at home to eat. He = has a good orchard and showed me ^ an everbearing blackberry. I hope I can call around about the time he kills those fine hogs and get some ^ spare ribs and sausage meat, for . there is no one to help eat these ^ good things but he and his wife, only . as his friends visit him , I was at Lockhart Saturday. Spent the night with Mr. Louis Hames, where we are always treated with kind hospitality. Lockhart Mill peo- ^ pie have taken care of their vegetables and have canned their part of t fruits and vegetables. Mrs. Alleood and sister. Miss Carrie Bailey, have canned quarts of fruits and veg- S etables, and only lost one day's work out of the mill while they were canning. They did this between mill hours and at night. ti The Community Fair held at Gault a school house was pood, with many h fine exhibits from the farm products bi and the ladies' pantries, and fancy b' work were also fine. Many Union s< people were visitors at the fair. Hon. Y' Macbeth Young was present and ?' made a fine talk that suited the occasion. d I attended the Oakland Community d fair. They had many fine exhibits. 81 Mr. W. A. E. This is the most simple of any churn that I have 1 ever seen. lie had this on exhibit, t' Talked like he would rarrv it. to the h county fair. He says he has had it t three years, using it at home for his b own use. b We found the lady folks at Oak- b land largely in the majority, only a very few men taking part in the fair. We found Messrs. J. H. Black and | B. E. Black, chairman and secretary - of the fair. Mr. C. G. Ivey and Mr. John Smith had some fine farm products on exhibit. Mr. Ivey had the e finest (5-months old mule colt. He said r he was going to show it at the county j fair. . The two young men, Messrs. Black, 1 also conducted the athletic sports, such as foot racing, and other things. . Mrs. J. W. Adams showed the old- ] est relic. This was an old steak or t turkey dish loO years old, belonging . to her great grandmother. t Mr. Winfield Fowler, who was a graduate of the high school at Jones- | ville. has gone to Clemson this year. . Mr. Ollie Carter from Lockbart J was a visitor in this section last week. 1 I will say before closing my letter, ] while at Ix>ckhart, I visited a dying | man, Mr. Ira McCluney. I will say he preached his sermon before he died. I looked on ' him and ho seemed to be sleeping ; away. That is the way he died, he didn't seem to be in any pain. (By Associated Press) Copenhagen, Oct. 25.?The proceeds of the Danish sea fisheries more than doubled during the past year, while the quantity of the catch increased about 40 per cent. The value for last year was nearly $10,000,000. The number of Danish fishermen is now 10,000, an increase of about 1,000, and the fishing boats number 15,400, valued at $5,000,000. Cornstalks (stover) contain 10 per cent of the food material in the corn plant. When left out all winter, without protection, much of their fool value is lost. Every effort should le made to utilize corn stover either by shredding or cutting fine before feeding, or by running it through the silage cutter to make stover silage. In putting up the latter in the silo, use an abundance of water. Plan to eliminate waste on the farm; feed stover; don't waste it. These 4ittle healthy spots have never failed to show uff in such cases, and they never will?because that ground has been loosened up to a depth and the roots have gone somewhere. Now get your Jobson and give the rest of the field the same medicine, There will be no more green spots because. it will all be green. This is just one illustration of the way John B. Jobson developed his Common Sense System of farming, in accordance with nature's laws, for bigger profits and constant improvement of the land.
