THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1917. It is stated that Valentine "acts as the eyes and ears in ascertaining public and political opinion" for Emperor William. Our judgment is that he had better be very careful as to both eyesight and hearing just at this t i mo TKnvn ovn ^ v*i?iv< aiivic a 1 v- oi^uo nidi/ V.ICI Illilliy is having some internal troubles just now. Mr. Farmer, Mr. Mill Man, Mr. Merchant, Banker, Clerk, Preacher? Mr. Everybody: Better buy a bond. If the Germans win this war this country of ours would be a mighty poor place in which to live. Think if Belgium, or Northern France, of A?menia, and then go buy a bond. Th^ time is short. What you do you must do by Saturday night. President Wilson has purchased Sin,000 worth of the second Liberty Loan Bonds. He bought $10,000 worth of the first issue. Thus does our President show the way to all patriots. We have never heard of President Wilson being a wealthy man. There are many people in Union county who could, perhaps, buy bonds with less sacrifice than has Mr. Wilson. There is little to he said for the man who, after all that has been said and done to arouse him, is yet unmindful of the needs of the hour and will not subscribe to Liberty Bonds. It will not he his fault if he continues to enjoy the blessings of freedom. The patriotism of his neighbor will have saved him. But, to tell the truth, he is scarcely worth saving. Remember the meeting of the Union Chamber of Commerce tonight October 2-"). Don't stay away and then find fault with whatever is done in the matter of electing a paid secretary Other important matters will be considered, but the question of a secretary is, for the moment, the vital question. It will probably be settled to night. A full meeting of the organization's membership is greatly desired. The Times editor bought one of the $ 50 bonds a day or two ago. Aftci hearing the speeches in the courthouse yesterday, he decided to buy another bond, and for $500. By paying $50 down on this bond and carrying the balance through the bank, there would be interest on $450, say at 8'/' which would amount to $.16.00 a year The bond will pay in interest the sum of $20 per year. This leaves a differ ence of $16 in interest a year, v/r.ic' will have to be paid so long as there is no further reduction on the sum borrowed. We have concluded thai we can and will gladly pay $1.:!."! per month from now to the end of life, if necessary, to help this proven ir.enl win in this just war. It will he w>r:h it, every cent of it, and more. . I ... ) i The Liberty iAnin rally yesterday p was calculated to greatly increase the enthusiasm necessary if Union county is to do its part in the mighty campaign now on. Saturday will complete the time limit allowed. If you ^ have not purchased a bond, big or lit- a, tie, do not delay further. Go to your A banker and talk it over with him. It si has been made so easy that almost P.1 anybody can arrange to carry a $50 ( bond. It would be an easy matter for well-nigh every farmer, every mill op- vi erative, every clerk, preacher and is school teacher in the entire county to c buy one $50 bond. "Ruy now, pay E later", if that is the best you can do. It just will not do for our country to ^ go begging in this great crisis. It is a crisis, a tremendous crisis, and there is no doubt about it. Everything in the world that an enlightened and q, Christian civilization holds dear is at It stake. Evervthinir that men nnsspsspil 111 - r C with the spirit of freedom hold dear n< is at stake. r b< L Editorial Clippings | cs M di The name of the "Land of Flowers" V1 should he changed to the "Land of Booze."?Newberry Observer. C8 . . y< As a newspaper the daily edition of sj The Union Times is "making good." The Times is carrying a fair amount s| of business, also, and appears to have w behind it the interest and backing of er a large number of Union business q men. As time goes on Union will ap- p( preciate more and more the advantages of having a daily newspaper, and business ought to improve steadily for the daily Times.?Rock Hill Herald. / By the way, what has become of the old split log drag? Wonder if any one is using him when the weather is ^ favorable? We are inclined to think and to fear that in this age of getting rich the people have forgotten so faithful and so useful a friend as the old split log. Better get busy and use him the next time the weather conditions are favorable.
