If the Germans win this war this
country of ours would be a mighty
poor place in which to live. Think if
Belgium, or Northern France, of A?menia,
and then go buy a bond. Th^
time is short. What you do you must
do by Saturday night.
President Wilson has purchased
Sin,000 worth of the second Liberty
Loan Bonds. He bought $10,000
worth of the first issue. Thus does
our President show the way to all
patriots. We have never heard of
President Wilson being a wealthy
man. There are many people in Union
county who could, perhaps, buy
bonds with less sacrifice than has Mr.
Wilson.
There is little to he said for the man
who, after all that has been said and
done to arouse him, is yet unmindful
of the needs of the hour and will not
subscribe to Liberty Bonds. It will
not he his fault if he continues to enjoy
the blessings of freedom. The patriotism
of his neighbor will have
saved him. But, to tell the truth, he
is scarcely worth saving.
Remember the meeting of the Union
Chamber of Commerce tonight
October 2-"). Don't stay away and then
find fault with whatever is done in the
matter of electing a paid secretary
Other important matters will be considered,
but the question of a secretary
is, for the moment, the vital question.
It will probably be settled to
night. A full meeting of the organization's
membership is greatly desired.
The Times editor bought one of the
$ 50 bonds a day or two ago. Aftci
hearing the speeches in the courthouse
yesterday, he decided to buy another
bond, and for $500. By paying
$50 down on this bond and carrying
the balance through the bank, there
would be interest on $450, say at 8'/'
which would amount to $.16.00 a year
The bond will pay in interest the sum
of $20 per year. This leaves a differ
ence of $16 in interest a year, v/r.ic'
will have to be paid so long as there
is no further reduction on the sum
borrowed. We have concluded thai
we can and will gladly pay $1.:!."! per
month from now to the end of life, if
necessary, to help this proven ir.enl
win in this just war. It will he w>r:h
it, every cent of it, and more.

now on. Saturday will complete

bond. It would be an easy matter for
well-nigh every farmer, every mill op- vi

It just will not do for our country to ^
go begging in this great crisis. It is
a crisis, a tremendous crisis, and there
is no doubt about it. Everything in
the world that an enlightened and q,

and to fear that in this age of getting
rich the people have forgotten so
faithful and so useful a friend as the
old split log. Better get busy and use
him the next time the weather conditions

the good road on which to drive that

Escaped Destruction ^
(By Associated Press)
French Port, Oct. 25.?An American
steamer reached port today suffering
from result of a two hours'
tight with submarine, which ended
only when American destroyer ap- jj
peared. Commander sent out calls for
aid when he sighted the submarine,
as escape seemed impossible. The
u-boat ami steamer exchanged shots
until a shell bursted in the steamer's _
engine room, disabling engines and ~y
wounding seven men. Before the submarine
could finish its work a destroyer
appeared and the enemy was
driven away.
