Manning Fixes Wednesday, April 11, as "Naval Recruiting Day." Apportioned by Counties. Columbia, April 9.?Wednesday, April 11, has been designated by Governor Manning as "Naval Recruiting Day" in South Carolina to get the 300 young men allotted to thi? State as it quota of the 28,500 needed to bring the United States navy to war strength. The governor calls upon all patriotic citizens to assist in this movement to get recruits for the first line of defense for the country. The proclamation will be broadcasted over the State and letters were sent out to many postmasters and other prominent citizens urging their help in this work. The proclamation of the governor follows: Governor's Proclamation. "Whereas, a state of war exists and the president has called for the increase of 38,500 men to fill the emergency complement of the navy, of which South Carolina's quota is 800. "Now, therefore, I, Richard I. Manning, Governor of South Carolina, do hereby designate Wednesday, April 11, 1917, as Naval Recruiting Day in South Carolina, and I call upon the citizens of the State to help in securing the recruited number of enlistments as an earnest of your patriotism ind loyalty. "This is a call from the president >f the United States for men to fill ;he first line of defense. It is the call >f your country for the defense of rv/ui tuumry ana ior our saiety ana honor.
