Each state ei was given from 3 to 5 minutes to do some "stunt." The representatives of q all the states marched in procession, gj with the band playing, and each state having draperies of red, white or blue. gj Each state marched by two's for a <j< short distance, then joined the two's |8 of another state, thus marching four ij abreast, till they came to the entrance ^ of the seating place, then separating again, each state going to seats as- jc signed to it. The campus was beautifu'ly lighted. a Mississippi won first honor in the pageant. The delegation carried f< ma crnnlloo in ^M 11 in vuv pivcvooiuu anu uii tJ the stage. A crowd of the delegation tl were negro characters. These "negroes" illustrated Christmas in "the la quarters." One of them being the a leader in asking for blessings, etc., s< and the others saying "amen" and other things in negro style. Finally w the prayer service is turned into a a: dance, the leader in prayer being the w leader in the dance. d> South Carolina won second honors. Our delegation gave the different T stages of South Carolina women, as all of the representatives were wo men, with the exception of Prof. Tate, ^ who went with the South Carolina delegation. Had a frame set upon ti the stage draped in black cloth as the 01 picture frame, the back ground being ti our state flag. The South Carolina ol delegation marched on the stage and stood behind screens. Prof Tate with si a small South Carolina flag pinned on a his shoulder stood at one side of the stage and read slowly the pharaphase. a Each character took their place in ?< front of the picture frame as their E turn- came. First the settler's wife, v spinning, tnis was miss uoodwin of i( Greenville; next the colonial dame, v Miss Carmichael of Dillon, followed vj by the energetic woman, Miss Wilds i< of Columbia. Next the lady of the c< South, Miss Myers of Charleston, fol- tl lowed by the nurse, dressing the wounds, etc of the soldiers, which was *1 Miss Dillafd of Clinton. Then the southern girl and her old mammy by tl her side, these were Miss Gray ol s< Columbia and Miss Haney of Union. e< i aet the woman of today with her m college robe, Bible and tennis ratcher, b( showing that the woman of today is ei trained mentally, spiritually and phy- o sically. Kentucky had a colonel's soliloquy, j, he colonel takes a drink and about hat time a girl rides up on a fine T orse. The crowd then sings "My Old [entucky Home." Louisiana had a burlesque on sani ition in 2 acts. The first part demnstrating Louisiana leading in saniition. The other part making 1 ijjrht g f sanitation. Virginia showed Thomas Jefferson inning the declaration of independ- ie nee. There were three divisions of Tenessee. One division being the eitv :-hools of Nashville. The other being >avidson county, (the county Na.-'nille is in) and the other being all the ^ eft of Tennessee. The Nashville diis ion showed Peabody. college and ^ rhat went to make the college. Davison county showed the different ounty. The other Tennesseeans had neir state song and flag. Several of the other states, where C lere was only one person from the tate all went together and called temselves "barbarians.' They wore omewhat outlandish costumes, danci and misbehaved in general for a linute or so. Then one of the mem- ( ers said, "He held a box from which c ach could pass by and draw out the _ ne wish of their heart."
