Elloree, July 12.?One of the most utal crimes ever perpetrated in angeburg county, committed midly between here and Vance late yesrday afternoon in a dense bay near e Two Chop public road, was ought to light this morning, when e body of little Miss Essie Bell, 12 ars old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. iniel Bell, was discovered after an night search, foully murdered and refully covered by the confessed jrderess, Rosa Richardson, a negro oman about .'55 years old. A grim id a horrifying spectacle is witnessI today in that community. The body little Miss JSssie Bell, with her :ad beaten into a pulp by a lightood knot, lies prepared for burial in e quiet home of Daniel Bell, while o hundred yards away, near the ene of the crime, swinging to a tree. the body of her alleged assassin, >sa Richardson, riddled with bullets. Guilt was established, the woman nfessed, a volley fired, the unknown cnt, sober men mopped their brows id dispersed. Thirty negroes, who ithered near the scene of the crime, >uld have fired the volley if permitd, and went to "onsole the priefricken family. While the crime has cast a pall over e entire community, and hundreds people have pone to the scene, ere was no race feelinp whatever ident. Story of the Murder. The facts substantially told were follows: The murdered pirl went praze the family cow in a field on e public road a short distance from e home which was hidden from view ' a dense field of corn. Just in front this field on the opposite side of e road is the house where Rosa ichardson lived. Mr. Daniel Bell as reading his newspaper and the other, Mrs. Bell, was leaving with le of her sons to board the afternoon ain at Vance for Charleston. Mr. ill was absorbed in reading and premed that little Essie had gone to e station with her mother and would turn with her brother. When the tung man returned home without his ster, Mr. Bell inquired for Essio id the young man told his father at she had gone to graze the cow hen he saw her last. Mr. Bell immeately gave the alarm, and searching irties were formed. The whole cornunity was scoured. Rosa Richardn was suspected of luring the girl the woods. She, with her sister, as held during the night by some the searching party. She told seval disconnected stories, which led ore strongly to belief in her guilt. message reached Elloree late durg the night that the girl was missg, and the penitentiary bloodhounds ere wired for, but it was later learnI that they were out of the city. The suspected were rushed to the lloree guard house. Body Discovered. The local telephone being out of mmission, connection was establishI at St. Matthews. Sheriff Salley as notified and Columbia was asked have hounds make a cross-country ip, but before either reached here e body was discovered, and a dash as made for the town guard house, ural police, the magistrate and the tendant and several citizens of Elloe, who did all they could to protect e prisoner, were choked, thrown to e ground and the crowd held at bay r six-shooters. The victim was placI in a waiting automobile, taken ick to the scene of the crime. The woman was examined. Blood is on her clothing and other evinces of guilt was established. She nfessed to the crime, without giving ly reason for having committed it. The posses had tracked the little rl and the woman into the bay, both acks fitting the shoes. The woman as tracked to her home, evidently turning after committing the deed. No Reason Assigned. There is no reason assigned for the ed, except that the woman was a id character and had refused to ork for Mr. Bell, on whose plac* e lived. On several occasions it is leged that she grew dissatisfied and lien and the theory is advanced that e lured the little girl into the woods i the pretext of showing here someing, and murdered her to get ven?ance. Sheriff Salley, of Orange irjji who was notified of the crime o late, reached here this afternoon id viewed the remains. The body Rosa Richardson was cut down and iried while the victim of this horri- j e tragedy was laid to rest at Gerism iptist church, in the presence of a rge crowd of grief stricken friends id relatives. While the community where this ime was committed are steady and w-abidin# citizens, and have always Id themselves against mob violence, e action of the posse it appears, has I THE W< THE STORE THAI FACTS you should know ; WONDER.
