Hearsay evidence, interspersed a times by bitter and insinuative po litical and personal remarks, featur ed the first session of the legislativ committee appointed to investigat certain charges made in connectioi with the affairs of the State Hospits for the Insane, which was held yes terday in the supreme court room. Three witnesses?the governor o South Carolina; B. R. Tillman, Unit ed States senator, and J. W. Babcock M. D., superintendent of the Stat Hospital for the Insane?gave testl mony at the session, which laste four hours. At 2 o'clock the commit tee adjourned, to meet again Monda; afternoon at 3 o'clock, when the tak iig of testimony will be resumed. Members of the committee are: 1 J. Mauldin of Pickens, T. J. The investigation was brough about as a result of a message sen 'tc the general assembly by the gov t'ernor, which contained a letter fron Senator Tillman. In his letter th senator charged that the governo and his "underlings and satellites were trying to manipulate the sale o the property of the State Hospita for the Insane in Columbia and tha I ar effort was being made to oust Dr Babcock and his assistant, Dr. L.
