Louis Weirtheimer, Wealthy Merchant, Shot by Former Employe. \ New York, April 28.?Leopold Weir. theimer, a wealthy diy goods merchant, was shot three times in his home in West One Hundred and Fifteenth street early today. He was wounded in the chest, arm and right slle. and is in a serious condition. . " Charged with the shooting the poller V nave arrested Joseph Simpson. 3ij years old. of East One Hundred and I Twenty-first stvcei. The injured man is 32 years old and a member of tho firm of Aaron & Weirtheimer, dry goods merchants who recently were burned out at their place of business In Third avenue. Simpson, the police say, was employed there as a watchman prior tc the fire. At the time of the fire two persons were burned to death. The motive for the shooting is a mys tery both to the poliee and the Weirtheimer family, and Simpson, who was very cool when arrested, refused tc make any statement. Since the fire Weirtheimer has not been engaged in any business. The firm discharged Its employes, including Simpson, but he got work as a motorman. A week ago he lost that position. He had a long talk with Mr. Weirtheimer and tho family think Simpson wanted , money. The latter returned to the Weirtheimer home at an early hour today and the shooting occurred in tlie hallway of tho house, aftor which Simpson walked away and later \*as arrested. . , N TRAGEDY IN ALABAMA. Negro Killed by Lightning. Washington, Ga., April 28.?Saturday afternoon a negro man by the name of Do: ricott, who lived a few miles west of here, was instantly killed by a stroke of lightning. Just as a very dark cloud was approaching the negro went to the fireplace to lay on some wood. He had barely stooped down when a hnlt of Ii<r\i ? ciaciltu uuwri the chimney with the above result Several other negroes were in the room at the time and rushed to the yard. When they returned they found a portion of the dead man's body lying in the fire and partly consumed. Big Lumber Mill Burned. Blakely, Ga., Apill 28.?Flowers Btios.' Lumber company's saw mill at this place has been destroyed by fire The loss was about $15,000. This Is one of the largest mills In southwest Georgia. It cut 50,000 feet of lumbei dally and gives employment to about 300 hands. Their planing mills, kilns and stock hottse were saved, but at best It will he several weeks before they can resume their regular output The origin "of the fire Is unknown, but It Is supposed to have caught from shavings near the saw mill.
