Etta Jane, April 18.?The rain this a. in. has given farmers another backset. Last week was devoted principally to plowing aud some cane seed was planted. For some time your correspondent has been too unwell to write his regular letters, and consequently has gotten behind in that work. The boys havo a debating society at our school house. They meet weekly. Wheat is looking well, though it has some signs of being cold hurt, besides a mold or rust has attacked the blade. Several of our neighbors are having fish to eat. They catch them on set hooks or by baskets and gill nets. The Salem congregation will invite ?norec Presbytery to meet with it this fail. The health of our community la quite good just now. There are no bad cases that we hear of except Mrs. *. A. The ground was too wet to work in many places. Many of our people got a good view oi the moon in eciipso last Saturday night. "Our old friend, T. Jefl Hughes, passed here this a. m. on his way to Union with a load of chickens and eggs. Union seems to be the best market near us fpr such produce and our reople will always patronize it. We hope many of our young people will get to attend the Confederate reunion in Columbia next month. Those Columbians are making preparations to entertain the veterans and their friends, and for them to will a thing is to do it. They will succeed I am assured from the Interests they take in such matters. T. M. Llttlejohn, Esq , of our county, has been appointed by Qov. Heyward to the Sugar Cane Growers' Convention at Macon, Oft. This is a good appointment and if all the othei delegates are practical comm on-sensc farmers like I know Mr. Littbejohn to be good results will grow otit of the meeting. Wood, Union, S. C. Dear Sir: Here's an interesting slui-y about paint. We give you the name of the story-teller; write him and find out all about it. Mr. John Hanna, grocer, of Girard, Ponn., painted his house with Devoe Lead and Zinc paint. He thought it expensive, but he bought it. After finishing the job, he brought back nearly half the paint and said it was i the cheapest job of painting he ever did. Write to Mr. Burt Young and Mr. E. H. Hiler of the same place. Also to Mr. H. H Stephenson, Cashier of ( Oil City (Pa.) Savings Bank. It is the cheapest paint in the world becauso it is all paint. It covers most surface to the gallon, and it wears longest. , There's going to be a lot of this paiut used in Union. When it gets a i foot hold, it never lets up; and the , painter who uses Devoe Lead and 1 Zinc is going to save money for his patrons. Yours truly, . F. W. Dkvhr <Cr f!r? i New York.
