Scarcely bad the surface canals been 1 accepted as a success when southwestern Louisiana was startled by the an- 1 iiouncenieiit that there were strata of 1 gravel at 1125 to 12uu feet under the sur- 1 race of the entire section containing an ' unlimited supply of water which would ' of its own pressure come so near the ' surface that it could be readily pumped. ' Pipes of two, throe, four, six and eight inches in si/.e have been sunk to the gravel and pumped continuously for months without diminution of the t supply.
