Soi!tlioiolrra Tcxiiit,
!n lS'vl and few fanners from
the northwestern prairie states settled
on the ::reat southern prairie extending
along the coast of Louisiana t?? the
Texas line ami 1 cgun at oiieo to a !apt
the ir.aeliinrry to whkh they had bv.n
accustomed?gang plow, disk harrow,
drill, broadcast seeder and twine hinder?to
the rice Industry. Where prairies
were intersected by a creek that
eou'd he used to tloovl them (hey wort
surrounded by a small levee thrown up
with a road grader or a plow with wit'..a
attachment. Large crops were produced.
The prairies were practically
free from injurious grasses and the
water soft. The ricelieltls were handled
like the bonanza wheat farms of !
Dakota, and fortunes were made, j
Levees were cheaply constructed.
Little attention was paid to drainage. \
Work was carelessly done, tlu? object ;
being apparently to plant a large acre- j
age and secure a certain number of ,
hiudtcls. l'ltimate failure was certain
and hastened by a succession of dry
years, in which creeks failed and reservoirs
were found to be expensive and
unreliable.
To provide a reliable supply of water
pumphtg plants for raising water front
the streams were gradually put in. The
elevation of the prairies above the
streams varies from 0 to f>S feet, the
larger portion being front 15 to 25 feet. 1
At first farms along the streams and 1
t
lakes were irrigated. Graduallyflarge
-urfaee canals were constructed (J? 'he
-lightly elevated ridges of land which s
xist in nearly every township. These 1
-urfaee canals are built front 20 to 15*s *
feet in width, according to the area to s
oe watered. Tito sides of the canal are
aised from four to live feet with plows ;l
uid scrapers or with grading liutchin- 1
ry. Side gates are inserted in the
mbankment as frequently as nece>sa- 1
ry. Laterals are run from the main
anal to accommodate remote farms. *
Powerful pumping plants are erected
at the bank of the river at the head of '
iho surface canal. These canals where *
well constructed and operated prove c
jntirely successful and make the rice
rrop a practical certainty over a large ^
section of country.
Scarcely bad the surface canals been 1
accepted as a success when southwestern
Louisiana was startled by the an- 1
iiouncenieiit that there were strata of 1
gravel at 1125 to 12uu feet under the sur- 1
race of the entire section containing an '
unlimited supply of water which would '
of its own pressure come so near the '
surface that it could be readily pumped.
'
Pipes of two, throe, four, six and
eight inches in si/.e have been sunk to
the gravel and pumped continuously
for months without diminution of the t
supply. Such is the facility with which j i
these wells are made that a sb> inchJ c
tube has been put down to the full p
lepth required, 200 feet, in 14 hours. J 0
A system of such wells may be put i p
lown 30 to 40 feet apart, and each one [ p
ivill act independently and furnish as I
nucli water as if it stood alone. Such i c
i combination of wells may be united :
list below water level and all bo run ! ,.
>y one engine and pump. Water rises
naturally in these wells to within 20 I
'cot of the surface, and a number of !
lowing wells have been secured. The ' tj

Varieties of Ot^rn,

by smaller and tenderer varieties.
The Dwarf (Ireen. Dwarf White,

of vigor and productiveness none is the

The Dwarf (Ireen stands next to the
