Aug. 9.?Three men were instantly killed and 11 in? jured, two of whom will probably die, when striking miners fired on a pas? senger train on the Birmingham Min? eral railroad at Blocton this morning about 2 o'clock. The dead: Conductor Joe T. Collins, O. Z. Dent, deputy sheriff; Willard Ho* ell. non-union miner. The injured: Maj. F. H. Dodge, su? perintendent o-f safety, Tennessee Coal company, wounded in head and leg; E. E. Cox, superintendent of mine*, Tennessee Coal company, slightly wounded in knee; A. E. Cross, chief clerk, superintendent's office, wound? ed in arm and knee; J. C. Johnson, deputy sheriff, slightly wounded in side; A. C. Bryant, deputy sheriff, slightly wounded in side; J. C. Myer, laborer, wounded in leg; Robert Sigmon, wounded in arm and breast. The train was a special, bearing non-union men to the Blocton mines, under guard of soldiers and deputies. On the outskirts of the town the en? gineer suddenly saw a log across the track and at once a fusillade was fired into the train. The engineer did not stop but let the cowcatcher throw the log from the track, and put on full I steam. The place where the attack was made was a cut, the ground be? ing on a level with the lower part of the windows. The assailants, behind, rocks above poured down a murder? ous fire directly into the windows and. at the engineer. Practically every win? dow in the train was broken and shots struck all parts of the engine and cab*. The train proceeded to Blocton and the dead and Injured were returned to Birmingham. Dogs were hurried to the scene and took trails through the woods and directly to the union quarters. Eight negroes were ar? rested this afternoon and other arresta are expected. Oov. Comer held a flurried confer? ence with Lieut. Col Hubbard, com? manding the militia, this morning andr another company was hurried to Blocton. All la reported quiet there i tonight. The trouble has caused widespread indignation today and a general de? mand is being made that more stren? uous action be taken looking to the perservatlon of order. Gov. Coner has not made a state? ment on the situation today. While no disturbances have been reported; in the district today, other than the Blocton affair, the situation is regard? ed as the most grave since the in? auguration of the strike o* nr rr. ?->th ago.
