The train was a special, bearing
non-union men to the Blocton mines,
under guard of soldiers and deputies.
On the outskirts of the town the en?
gineer suddenly saw a log across the
track and at once a fusillade was fired
into the train. The engineer did not
stop but let the cowcatcher throw the
log from the track, and put on full
I steam. The place where the attack
was made was a cut, the ground be?
ing on a level with the lower part of
the windows. The assailants, behind,
rocks above poured down a murder?
ous fire directly into the windows and.
at the engineer. Practically every win?
dow in the train was broken and shots
struck all parts of the engine and cab*.
The train proceeded to Blocton and
the dead and Injured were returned
to Birmingham. Dogs were hurried
to the scene and took trails through
the woods and directly to the union
quarters. Eight negroes were ar?
rested this afternoon and other arresta
are expected.
Oov. Comer held a flurried confer?
ence with Lieut. Col Hubbard, com?
manding the militia, this morning andr
another company was hurried to
Blocton. All la reported quiet there
i
tonight.
The trouble has caused widespread
indignation today and a general de?
mand is being made that more stren?
uous action be taken looking to the
perservatlon of order.
Gov. Coner has not made a state?
ment on the situation today. While
no disturbances have been reported;
in the district today, other than the
Blocton affair, the situation is regard?
ed as the most grave since the in?
auguration of the strike o* nr rr. ?->th

A dealer there who was
12-gallon paint, threw it ou pot
In the 6-gallon paint.
Do you see why? The lest
paint cost less for the job by Ions
of paint and 6 days' labor; i: N for
paint and $12 to $24 for labor (ac rd
ing to painters wages $2 to $ - .
A dealer in paint at Malone. X Y. was
selling this 6-gallon paint, was offered
the 12-gallon paint for 15c less a gal?
lon, and took it! To make that extra
15c a gallon, he saddles a loss of $22,
75 to $34,75 a job on his customers.
What if they find it out?
The people had better look-out for
that $22.75 or $34,75. whichever It la
?we don't know what painters' day
wages are there.
The two paints are Devoe and an?
other sold at the same price by the
gallon. Will you figure-out that II
g&llon paint: what a man can aff>r<l
to pay for a gallon of it?
The answer is (if you figure it right)
taking wages $2 a day: A man could
afford to put-on that paint if some?
body pays him 12 1-Sc a gallon; and.
fc\king wages $4 a day. he must get
61.21 a ga'lon.
