MEETING EXECUTIVE COMMIT? TEE. City Democratic Executive Commit? tee to Meet on Friday Afternoon nt 6 Oolovk. The city Democratic executive committee will meet on Friday after? noon at 6 o'lock In the o<Tice of City Clerk and Treasurer C. M. Hurst and business of Importance will be trans? acted In regard to tho coming muni? cipal election. The following is the pcrscnnel of the committee: ? E. C. Haynaworth, chairman, and I Edgar Skinner from Ward 1: John A. Clifton attd L. D.* Jennings from Whrd 'S; J. W. McKlever and E. H 'ifname*! from Ward 4: C. m% 1 Luret and H. A. Moses. . secretary, front Word <l; and Marion Molse. city at largo. i . ? It is stated that the reason the county board of commissioners post? poned action on the request of Dr. C. C. Brown that a portion of the court house grounds be appropriated for the erection of a monument to the late W. S. Graham, chief of the fire department, who was killed while In the discharge of duty, was that the authority of the board to grant the request is doubtful. A special act of the legislature would probably be necessary to legalize the grant of land asked for by Dr. Brown In behalf of the Graham monument committee. Another objection was raised by a member of the board to wit: that the granting of this request, in itself un? objectionable, would establish a pre? cedent that might, and probably would, prove awkward In fuluie. If one committee Is granted the right to erect a monument o^n the court house square to an individual, this board and future boards Would be bound in fairness to grant similar re? quests made by any other committee of citizens, white or colored, who might fool desirous of honoring tho memory of a friend. This point Ui \v< 11 taken and the matter should re? ceive careful const leratiott before any action is taken. Those who have not made their re? turns to the county auditor should do ?0 at once if thiy would avoid the penalty. it won't be lone: now until vou will hear the old, familiar lUestions, "Who will fitch today?M P.nd "Will they play a dcublehcader to ma tie up for the game Interrupted by th ? rain yesterday. V" it was suggested this morning that a good place for the erection of the Graham monument would bo at the corner of South Harvin and Bartlettc streets, only a few feet from the spot where the brave chief lost his life This seems to bo a good suggestion, if the plot of land could be seeured at this location. It would he a public locution, where ail persons going to and from the passenger station could seen the monument and know that Sumter honors her heroes, who die while doing their duty.
