GUV IS SICK. And the Following Contribution is the Result. Frigid Zone, Glacial Period? Now is the wioter of our discontenr. Htz. 4: 15. The discontent bas been meandering aroned for a numerous number of months ?od reached a state of high perfection during the past sum mer when any warrant for the arrest of the demottioo cash was returned nulla bona or non e3 inventos, as we beard one fellow pro nounce it, and the cry for the free and un limited coinage of silver became a howl and Then to yells for Bryan. W> are not inti mately or even personally acquainted with Mr. Bryan aod don't think he's any kin to os on either his Ma's or-Pa's side, bot we throwed off a vote od him ?U the same, tho' we really couldn't exactly tell why we did it. Well, Mr. Bryan wasn't in it and the hop/-s for free aod unlimited silver are-dashed. Discontent. Several other folks weie not elected also, out they are no kin to us either. The only close kin we had that was defeated ?3 Salem. Lots of discontent again. Now Salem produced us. We are one of her na tive productions and yet we have not pat on sackcloth nor gone into an ash heap because she's got to stay at home for 4 years more. The Salem syndicates should, hereafter, avoid leap year. It only gets here every 4 years and what with the legal statute and leap year we opine that Salern county will be a right Siart grown child before she's born. So far she's come as near being a successful failure, io every way, as any tfjfort we ever heard of. Bot the elections have nought to do with ocr own discontent r We don't believe the coun try's going to "demoiiioo bow wows" no matter who's elected President. The coun try's doiog dog-goned well now if the coun ?ry'd only see it. A f-w years since we dis covered thu our laode were finely adapted to ?er?laortages and? we tried 'em and they grew finely. Indeed, we found they'd make as good winter growth '<s spring cr summer, and they were so promisias we fearlesslj in creased the acreage and now they've become ose busje pocket acber, what the lawjers term incumbrances, and we wish to remove them by deluging the land with free silver, quick silver too. (Gold dust 13 said to be very cleansing toe, our wash woman says so ) Theo we can pnt more mortgages upon the very same iand immediately. They went injure the land and are very profitable tc to the lawyers and to our friend the Register Me3ne Conveyance. Our discontent don't arise from any anxiety as to goiog to "Dial's Bay" neither. There may be very good fishing there? we might catch something. It might be an -office. We ucderstand they nre not all <:tok up" yet. No, "Done of these things moveos:" bot we ars vastly and m-goritu diously and extensively discontented with this dod-gasted weather. On last Sunday we had a sort of semi-quasi-invalid with some Broochotrachelaryuxial irritation of the tubular passage to the lights; C^ot electric lights. Wense gas,) which caused ns near ly to coDgb up the "vital spark." So we vtook advice. (We don't generally take any; havdng a large supply of our owo on hand) to coddle and nurse and doseonrself (We'd infinite?* prefer remaining an interesting in valid to baing tbe most robust corpse.) We w re hopinW the balmy atmosphere of our genial Southland climate would soon put es all right again, when, down from tbe dratted North, com^s this double-barreled blizznd and we were^a prisoner in jail. Our climate is assuredly| uoparalleled. Ooe day you may ciotbe ciomfortablv in a lineo duster aod poll out for {Florida oa a lightening Express and you may bowl for flancel and blankets aod Ooffdto.' robe before getting half way. You can stay at home and have ^uo freckles aod prickly- beat at ooe end ana chill blaics at the other. One night the atrxosphere is balmy and the sky is rxisty and the stairs shine dime and you can al a. ost bear tbe Xaty-dids. To-nigbf, though, the pellucid and biting space, ?he orb3 of heaven twinkle with a twink only to be seen in tbe frozen zone. 0, it's an admirable climate, a charm ing region for- colds and bronchitis and chill blaius. Have you ever bad your loved and loving ooes far away and been invalided alone ? Remembering tbe doctor's direc tions ? Measuring your owo doses? Rub bing your own throat ? Ordering your own nourishment ? And in general ecting the double parts of invalid and nurse? Oyes, there were servants, very good servante, and good neighbors across the road, who bave been kind to U3 and we are grateful, but like the "Brook," "Some would come and some would go, but we go on forever." So it seemed. Well, thi3 ba-? been our fis for one long, weary week. And, Mr. Editor, we will say, with per fect troth/that the brightest hour of our im prisonment was the hour tbat brought u3 the Sumter D*i!y Item and gave us the fresh news from the outside world in it's crisp and breezy rolumns. We did not know until vecy recently that the Item bad such a country circulation. We bear of "Tbe Item" and it's Dews at every point in the county. * Guv. Kirst Guns Fired. Skirmish for the Battle Over the Dispensary. The fight against the State dispensary law at the assembling of the general assembly, which bas been talked of a great deal of late without anyone appa rently doing anything to push it along, seems at last to have begun in earnest. Below is an address to the Christain citi zens of the State, issued yesterday by the executive committre of the Pro hibition League of South Carotina, which shows the nature of tbe fi^ht against the dispensary system and giv?s the remedy that is proposed : To the Christain citizens of tbe State : Mighty evil dominates the land. The State of South Carotina is in league with this evil and every man, wowan and child, by virtue of -their citizenship has been made a partner in this crime of crimes and will so remain until an open and avowed hostility to the same by him or her has been declared and every advantage taken to put ibis evil away. it is because of this that the recmt State conference of Prohibitionists met in Columbia, organized themselves into a society to be known as the Prohibi tion League of South Carolina and by resclutiou requested that the executive committee prepare and issue an address to the Cbristain citizens of "the Stare. In pursuance of this resolution, the committee make^ this address and ap peal in the name of God to the coo sciences of our people : We need not here recount the magni tude of-the evil, how to deal with this great question is tbe perplexing thought that engages tbe mind of the. Cbristain patriot of to-day. It is a moral ques tion and therefore addresses itself with tremendous force to the ministry and lay membership of tbe church of Christ. Alas, we have been retas, our mem bers iii many instances have voted with and patronized the trrffic. became bondsmen and rented' warehouses to the traffickers in human souls. With out aid the State would have been poweriess to pass the law that resolved herself into a great, barkeeper and her agricultural hall into a Siate liquor saloon. Oar resolutions at our con ferences, associations and presbyteties de?ning the enormity of tbe t vil of the l?quor traffic and tbe proper attitude of the church has fallen short of the rem edy. They have only shown our in constancy in falling to use our pulpits, our discipline and cur organizations soiidiy against the liquor devil If, therefore, as a church or as a citizen simply, we would repudiate the dishonor brought upon U3 by the State of which we are citizens, tbere must be an opeu and declared hostility,to the ?quor traffic that means a w2r of exter mination at least so fer as selling it for CS beverage purposes is concerned. This declaratijn musf. go beyond mere words, resolutions and such like The church must organize on lines of opposition or use her present organiza tion and discipline, and work acfciveiy against this demon that proves the greatest hindrance Otherwise she will by her silence and inactivity increase the measure of her complicity with tbe State in this foul wroLg and eventual ly be robbed of her spiritual power. There are others without church affiliations ; their obligations and re sponsibilities are equally great. It is ltkewis3 their duty to be organized against this evil if they would be ef ective in meeting their responsibility We believe it is the will of God that Prohibition should be the watchword of those thus organized, and that prohibi tion should mean no compromise with e?tl. The committee will seek to secure tbe passage, at the next session of the legislature, of an amendment to the present laws of the State that will pro hibit liquoi s being sold for any pur pose other than medicinal mechanical and scientific use. They earnestly request ihe cooperation of ail good men by prayer and work to aid tnem in bring ing to a successful issue the task before them. T- .he ministers of the Gospel especially, do they extend the request for their invaluable aid by, disccursing upon and otborwise laboring for the prohibition of tbe liquor traffic as only a Cbristain minister can do. The committee will be charged with a great burden invo'ving many duties. They will certainly need tbe encourage ment and help of all who are with them in this righteous war. L. D. Childs. C D. Henry McTveb, Chief Justice. Church Entertainments. There is no more timely article among the many excellent contributions to The Forum for December than that in which Kev. William Bayard Hale discusses modern church entertain ments. The ?st he gives of shows of ques tionable and outrageous character I which have been given in tbe United j States during the present year for tbe benefit of churches and under the aus I pices and direction of pastors and church members indicates a reckless bess in tbe pursuit of such objects aod i a lamentable degradation of taste in j many communities. That shows of such character as many which Dr Hale j mentions and describes should be pa tronized or even tolerated in any Chris fian community is strange ; that they should be gotten up and directed by church people i>? almost incredible. After referring to a disgusting array of silly performances and catchpenny schemes, Dr. Hale comes to the cli max of these abuses as follows : "This is possibly funny ; but for monumental godlessness made endura ble by no saving grace of humor, for simian imbecility, for suprorr.e and inimitable folly unmarried by the ?iigh - est suggestion either of common de cency or ordinary self-respect, for groveling baseless and depraved vulgarity?the Trilby Party, other wise the Foot. Social, otherwise Ankle Auction, stands at the bead of the church entertainments of tbe year While others are trudging along the weary plains of the unimaginative and the ordinary, tb* Methodist Episcopal church of Suff'.:rn, Y., and St John's Protestant Episcopal church of New Brunswick. N. J., with aoblancb/ ed cheek aod dauntless eye bave scaled the Alphine heights of deathless shame. I hiive received from all parts of the country marked copies of newspapers reporting theec events ; some of the papom bearing the request, 'Please give this your attention.' ? am very willing to do eo. but ? regret, the inade quacy of my vocabulary, and ? refrain from any further attempt tj character ize th? performance In the Trilby Social, as given by tbe Suffern Meth odist Episcopal Epworth League aod the New Brunswick P. E Oiivt- Branch Scctety, the young ladies of the church display the; ?fver, let as say. and be polite?behind a cartaio, which is lifted to a height described as tantalizing. Men in froot of the curtain view what is displayed of one fi-msie after another and theo bid for tbe privilege of taking, ber to supper. The charm of the scheme is the ease wi'h which it lends itself to the worse than dobion- ; and I have no doubt that tbe press account of tbe scenes which atiendid the bid ding are. in both cases, highly colored, though the most litoral truth would oer tainly be exciting enough. Tee Boston Sunday Journal itinerated ooe of these events with a balf-page picture ; The New York Herald gave it a two-columu illustration ; tbe accompanying letter press and the reports published in other papers, describe a show which, in a re spectable community, under other than ecclesiastical management, might have difficulty m'h the police." We are proud of the fact that in the entire lift which Dr. Hale presents not a single church of any d?nomination in any southern state is mentioned This is a species of enterprise which the peo ple of the south shown n? disposition to adopt and which they will not tolerate Church entertainments are fre quent in our citie*8 at:d towns, but while pooie of them may r.ot he of a very high intellectural order, they are never absolutely silly and never indecent. Dr. Haie has spotten words of just condemnation cgaicst the execrable taste and lax morality of church enter tainments which have proved popular and profitable in some northern and western communities.?Atlanta Jour nal.
