Skirmish for the Battle Over the Dispensary. The fight against the State dispensary law at the assembling of the general assembly, which bas been talked of a great deal of late without anyone appa rently doing anything to push it along, seems at last to have begun in earnest. Below is an address to the Christain citi zens of the State, issued yesterday by the executive committre of the Pro hibition League of South Carotina, which shows the nature of tbe fi^ht against the dispensary system and giv?s the remedy that is proposed : To the Christain citizens of tbe State : Mighty evil dominates the land. The State of South Carotina is in league with this evil and every man, wowan and child, by virtue of -their citizenship has been made a partner in this crime of crimes and will so remain until an open and avowed hostility to the same by him or her has been declared and every advantage taken to put ibis evil away. it is because of this that the recmt State conference of Prohibitionists met in Columbia, organized themselves into a society to be known as the Prohibi tion League of South Carolina and by resclutiou requested that the executive committee prepare and issue an address to the Cbristain citizens of "the Stare. In pursuance of this resolution, the committee make^ this address and ap peal in the name of God to the coo sciences of our people : We need not here recount the magni tude of-the evil, how to deal with this great question is tbe perplexing thought that engages tbe mind of the. Cbristain patriot of to-day. It is a moral ques tion and therefore addresses itself with tremendous force to the ministry and lay membership of tbe church of Christ. Alas, we have been retas, our mem bers iii many instances have voted with and patronized the trrffic. became bondsmen and rented' warehouses to the traffickers in human souls. With out aid the State would have been poweriess to pass the law that resolved herself into a great, barkeeper and her agricultural hall into a Siate liquor saloon. Oar resolutions at our con ferences, associations and presbyteties de?ning the enormity of tbe t vil of the l?quor traffic and tbe proper attitude of the church has fallen short of the rem edy. They have only shown our in constancy in falling to use our pulpits, our discipline and cur organizations soiidiy against the liquor devil If, therefore, as a church or as a citizen simply, we would repudiate the dishonor brought upon U3 by the State of which we are citizens, tbere must be an opeu and declared hostility,to the ?quor traffic that means a w2r of exter mination at least so fer as selling it for CS beverage purposes is concerned. This declaratijn musf. go beyond mere words, resolutions and such like The church must organize on lines of opposition or use her present organiza tion and discipline, and work acfciveiy against this demon that proves the greatest hindrance Otherwise she will by her silence and inactivity increase the measure of her complicity with tbe State in this foul wroLg and eventual ly be robbed of her spiritual power. There are others without church affiliations ; their obligations and re sponsibilities are equally great. It is ltkewis3 their duty to be organized against this evil if they would be ef ective in meeting their responsibility We believe it is the will of God that Prohibition should be the watchword of those thus organized, and that prohibi tion should mean no compromise with e?tl. The committee will seek to secure tbe passage, at the next session of the legislature, of an amendment to the present laws of the State that will pro hibit liquoi s being sold for any pur pose other than medicinal mechanical and scientific use. They earnestly request ihe cooperation of ail good men by prayer and work to aid tnem in bring ing to a successful issue the task before them. T- .he ministers of the Gospel especially, do they extend the request for their invaluable aid by, disccursing upon and otborwise laboring for the prohibition of tbe liquor traffic as only a Cbristain minister can do. William Bayard Hale discusses modern church entertain ments. The ?st he gives of shows of ques tionable and outrageous character I which have been given in tbe United j States during the present year for tbe benefit of churches and under the aus I pices and direction of pastors and church members indicates a reckless bess in tbe pursuit of such objects aod i a lamentable degradation of taste in j many communities. That shows of such character as many which Dr Hale j mentions and describes should be pa tronized or even tolerated in any Chris fian community is strange ; that they should be gotten up and directed by church people i>? almost incredible. After referring to a disgusting array of silly performances and catchpenny schemes, Dr. Hale comes to the cli max of these abuses as follows : "This is possibly funny ; but for monumental godlessness made endura ble by no saving grace of humor, for simian imbecility, for suprorr.e and inimitable folly unmarried by the ?iigh - est suggestion either of common de cency or ordinary self-respect, for groveling baseless and depraved vulgarity?the Trilby Party, other wise the Foot. The secretary of state on Thursday granted a charter to the Pringle Bros company of Charleston, which is to do a general dry goods and notion bu3?oess. The three burglars who have been robbing the Standard Oil Co. officers in various Southern cities were cap tured in Augusta on Tuesday In Wilkes County, N. C , two strangers went to the house of H. E. Combs, who had a lot of fine brandy on hand, and bought a whole wagon load of it, paying for the spirits in what appeared to be greenbacks. When Comps carefully examined the bills he found they were Confederate notes that had been skillfully painted green These men are said to have played the same game on others. One of the Chinese passengers of the Ward Line steamer Vigilancia, which arrived at New York y ester day from Havana, was removed to North Brothers Island, suffering with j smallpox. The steamer will be thor oughly disinfected and the passengers j and crew vaccinated A dispatch from Habana to the Madrid lmparcial says that the local newspapers there are urging the ne cessity for carrying on farming opera tions in the island, otherwise a dis astrous famine is inevitable.
