From the Daily item, March IO Toe roof o? sf'pt?ZsvcoanectiCj* the kitch? en with the residence <;*' Mr. O'. EL Stub-is caught cn fire to-oNy a few mina: ? bet?re 2 o'ciock and was barding briskly between roof and ceiling when i: w>i? discovered The alarm wa-; gire;! n-.? before the bei) hegarty to strike Monaghan Squad had reached in? scene and was throwi c . stream or. the blaze: A second !::>(: cr' hose v?as stretched with?u * ?ew minutes and H second stream turned on T;.^ hook and ladder 'ruck and Game Cock Squad both reached tne lire shortly after ibe Monaghan Squad hu: their services were not needed. All this time everybody was looking op Main Street for the Dellar team, and most of them were afraid to attempt to cross the street, expecting the Deigar gang to come charging down the street at break-neck speed, and perhaps ran orer everything ou rhe right of way. ?ut seconds grew icio*minute?, arri the Delgar horse -nd boys came cot. Then the crowd began to ?sk : uWhere is Dellar an ? the horse?" ?cbo answered, ^Wbere'?" The sidewalks were o.~ people, ?nd the stores were deserted by pro? prietors and errand boys and they ware all locking for the D?!y>-r bors* and paying scant attention to the fir*. But the borse came not. After awhile Chief Bloom, ap? propriately attired in ins yellowish-white fireman's coat and whitish yellow fireman's bat, esme up thestreet io his racing buggy, bis horse on a dead run, ar.d lie got there ;:> time to see the last frw sharks drowned to death beneath the .Monaghan flood. Bat Delgar had not yet appeared ! After the water had been cut off and .\?or - aghan Squad was preparing to reel t!:'e hose and return to their bouse, the Delgar Hos? and wagon carne down the street, the horse running at a clipping gai: v.r.c five members of tue squad were banging to the wagoo tor dear life. They got to where the fire had been about five minutes or longer after Mon? aghan did, although they b?d a trained horse to help them get there. The Delgar boys took the goring of the crowd like little men. and explained their delay by exhibiting a fetf?keo cross bar. which was smashed as they started to .'eave the house, by the horse jamp ing off suddenly. A new pair of shafts had to be nut on before a second start could be made. Mr. C. E. Stubbs asks the writer to return his sincere thanks tn the firemen for the ser? vices rendered him ro-d.\v. But for their prompt assistance his house would have been a total loss. As it was, the damage will not exceed $30. G. O. ?. Mass Meeting. Frets the D*V.j Item, March 19. A Republican mass meeting was held in thc Court House last night that was attended by a large crowd of negroes and a few white men, the latter having been attracted thithar by curiosity. The speakers of the erenieg were S. M. Brnylon, Gsorge Murray, R. H. Rich? ardson and H. G. Maxwell The meeting was enthusiastic, but not uproarious as Republican ?u?lies were woot tc be in other days. The speakers were much more conservative in tone than past experiences would lead one to expect from the speakers. The general rfcnor of the speeches was that the Republican party should ne thoroughly reorganizad and all recruits from the Democratic party should be welcomer!. A: this time, the spenkers said, there are many Democrats "h-j are dis sattisfitd with the Democratic party acd if the Republicans p!'ac? no obstacles in their way they will pir, th? Republican party The meeting wc? in session until after ll o'ciock. The lily white recruits froru this city were not in evidence ?t the rcceiin^ lest night, a:;d ii i? presumed that they are still biding their time for- showing their (or his) hand.
