of them were afraid to attempt

took the goring of the crowd like little men.

started to .'eave the house, by the horse jamp
ing off suddenly. A new pair of shafts had
to be nut on before a second start could be
made.
Mr. C. E. Stubbs asks the writer to return
his sincere thanks tn the firemen for the ser?
vices rendered him ro-d.\v. But for their
prompt assistance his house would have been
a total loss. As it was, the damage will not
exceed $30.

A Republican mass meeting was held in thc
Court House last night that was attended by
a large crowd of negroes and a few white men,
the latter having been attracted thithar by
curiosity. The speakers of the erenieg were
S. M. Brnylon, Gsorge Murray, R. H. Rich?
ardson and H. G. Maxwell The meeting was
enthusiastic, but not uproarious as Republican
?u?lies were woot tc be in other days. The
speakers were much more conservative in
tone than past experiences would lead one
to expect from the speakers. The general
rfcnor of the speeches was that the Republican
party should ne thoroughly reorganizad and
all recruits from the Democratic party should
be welcomer!. A: this time, the spenkers
