WEDI?AY, DECEMBER 25. The ?Sale of the Phosphat? ~ ^ , Beds. ??^opesitiotfc^Jroai. a deliberative bo%, the great majority of whom arc f .rtuers, to impose a new monopoly of gigantic proportions upon this State, is a specimen of pa re Cori nth i aa effron? t? y ihat can scarcely be surpassed. It may be^ibat.. ?libe State's property in the phosphate beds is not worth more tba i the price set upon it, and that it may be a very good business transac? tion to sweep away the $6,GOO,OOO of the State debt by their sale On the O'her hand, io the absence of any de fiat e information on the subject that h is been given the publie, it may be tr e that these deposits are many times m vaiu? ble iban the people have uow an/ 'a teil Lent td ea of ^ doubt every cinzen of the State w>?dfeel immensely relieved to know t ?it-, this immense barden was lifted f J HI the shoulders of the taxpayers ; but this feeling would be very consider? ably neutralized when ir was discovered that this consummation was was accom? plished by the reckless sacrifice of pro? perty that was worth many times more than the price at which it was sold, and ?hieb, at its present rate of develop ment, would net only have in time satisfied this debt, but have been a j large souree of iucome for a generation j jet to come. This latter conjecture seems justified ; by the annual increase of the royalties j received froui these beds by the State j ia the last fifteen years, which are now I said to be five times the value that they j were at first, and which are now pay- j ing, annually ?2*27.000, or 3 ??er ceut. i on tH? State debt, without any proba- ! bili'y of a decline in value, or the S slightest indication of any practical { exhaustion of the supply. The main objection to this proposi- j tiou, however, is that if such sale were ' made to some sydicate. the effect would j be to create an immense monopoly in j one of the mast important commodities of tTi Siaie, in comparison with which, tbft la:e jute trust would appear a very small affair. That some such object was in view somewhere among those primarily'responsible for this proposi-j lion seems evident. Every thing about it savors of suspicion. However pure- may have been the intentiou of-tbe author of this bill, or j however bonestly ina^r bave acted the j commitine that rerjt?rted it favorably.it was, arleast, a piece of sublime assur? ance ia them to thus summarily attempt to carry cat such an lim porta nt measujp?i?fore it had been in. some de? gree dfceuaeed and understood by the j peop??vwhrvjM-they are supposed to rep- j reseu^- Marion Star, Electrons by the Legislature, j In addition to the election of two new Jadgea, the Legislature on Wed- j De8day re-elected Judges Hudson', and j Witherspoon, A.
