WEDNESDAY. MAY 15. How- Washington Looked. His- acse was very red that day, giv? ing-me the impression that ha was not so moderate in the use of liquors-as he was supposed to be. I found afterward that this* was a peculiarity. His nose was apt to tarn scarlet in a cold wind. He was standing near a small camp? fire, evidently lost in thought and making no effort to keep wara. Ht seemed six feet and a half in height, was as erect as an Indian, and did not (br a moment relax from a- military attitude. Washington^ exact height wc:s six feet two inches in his boots. He was then a little lame from striking his knee against a- tree. His eye was so gray that it looked almost white, and he i had a troubled iook on his colorless face. BPs bad a piece of woollen tied around his throat and was quite hoarse. Per? haps the throat trouble from which he Soally died had its origin about then. Washington's boots were enormous. They were No. IS: Ii is ordinary walk log shoes were No. ll. R*s hands j Were large ia proportion, and he could not buy a glove to fit him and had to j have his gloves made to -order. His sooth was his strong' feature, the lips being always tightly compressed ; that day they were compressed so tightly as to be pain fal to look at. At that time he weighed 200 pounds, and there was no surplus flesh about Bim. He was tremendously muscled, ?ad the fame of bis great strength was everywhere. His large" teat, when wrapped ip with the poles, was so heavy that it required two men to iace it in the wagoo.. Washington would lift it with one hand and throw it in the Wagon ar easily as if it were a pair of saddle bags. He could hold a musket wi& one hand and shoot with precision as easily as other men did with a horse pistol. His lungs were his weak point j sod his voice was never strong*. He was at that time in the prime of j ' life. His hair was a chestnut brown, j < his checks were prominent, and his ! ? bead was not large in contrast to every i I other part of bis body, which seemed j i large and bony at all points. His So- j ! ger joints and wrists were so large as ? ? to be genuine curiosities. As to habits ; < at tbet period. I found out much that j i might be interesting. He was an enor- j < mous eater, bat was content with bread j j and meat, if he had plenty of it. But 1? .hunger seemed to put him in a rage. ! < It-was bis custom to take a driuk of j ? ma or whisky on awakening in the j f morning. j i Of course all this was changed 'when h be grew old. I sew him at Alexandria i ( a year before he died. His hair was j 1 very gray and his form was slightly j 3 bent. -His chest was very thin. Hej< bad false teeth which did not fit and * ? pushed his ander lip outward.-Albur.y j ( Express. i c Value of the Cow Pea. ! \ If - there is a crop that witt.grow to j 3 perfection in this locality and pay more j handsomely than any other it is the ; cow pea. If we were writing for o-r ? Agricultural Department we would call ij! it .catjang,' but we mean this piece for ? f 1 Ihe readers of the Medium who know j < tbe plant as the cow pea and not the ' t 'catjang.* N The cultivation cf -the cow pea is as j ( simple as one could wish. It is inex- j c pensive and the poorest land will yield ! - a profitable return, lt can be worked ! when there is leisure from our standard H crops. It famishes an opportunity to j ; put in idle time. Dry weather is not : ?-<~tfomagiog to it while frequent rains are ! I .quite as beneficial 2s to other crops. i f The cow tea is pood fer man and j - beast. It is a nutritious and healthy i e diet for man and nothing better can be : {\ found for cattle Be-ides this the vines i t have excellent fertilizing properties. A : i crop of peas will make the soil mellow j i and enrich it, thus saving the outlay j I for manufactured fertilizers which has j t become such an onerous burden noon j t oar farmers. j c There is always a market for cow ' [ peas. At present the ruling price is j s not less than two dollars per bushel, i f more than four times the cost of produc- ; r tion. If the market was overstocked j fe here there is always a steady demand at : ? remunerative prices io Central and ' J South America. Cow pea9 are shipped j io great quantities to these countries j -1 from New Orleans and Wilmington, N. ! C. The magnitude of this trade would j surprise our: people who raise only a : few bushels,'?where they could profita- e bly sell huudreds. ? There is every inducement for our c farmers 'o put in a heavy crop of cow \ peas. The soil and olimare are adapted * to the crop. Its cult-ration is simple ^ and easy. It enriches our soil. The a cow pea is good for food ard the vines n for forage. The selling pri ;e is always remunerative, and a word to the wise . * should be buiiicicnt-Ao?tc?Ht j A I&ag 3,500 Years Old. C., writes to the Clarendon Enterprise j the following report of an experience, which wears the savage garb of a Rocky Mountain tale : About the last of March, ? forget the exact date, I was in the Santee Swamp inspecting timber with a colored man whom I had hired as a gui?e. While going through the swamp I came across some turkeys, and in trying tc get a shot at them, somehow, I became sepa? rated from my guide, and wc must have been fuHj a mile apart when I decided ta return to our camp. I blew the sig? nal agreed upon and took a straight ooaree to camp. While going j through a dense cane-brake, known as i "Porchers old Seid brake," I came j across a large bear's track, sufficiently large and fresh to make me feel a little nervous. I had a good four-inch blade knife with me, and knowing that I could not handle my gun with any de? gree of certainty in a place so thick, I ! opened my knife and put it iu my 4fok* ; pocket, for I really expected to comp ! across the bear in such a place. I hs.d ? scarcely proceeded half the distance io camp when, going in a stooping posi? tion through the cane, and happening to look up, I found myself face to face with an enormous -beer. My first thought was to shoot, which I did as soon as possible, -for the bear was stand? ing on his (or her) hind feet, not ten feet froa-^ne. Three steps more, and I would-have been locked in his firm em? brace. I fired both barrels in quick succession and began a retreat imme? diately afterward. The canes- were so thick that it was impossible to go fast, but I did my best, loading my gus at the same timer. Fortunately, it was a breach-loader. After I had gone back- j wards about twenty feet, I succeeded in i getting both barrels loaded. The beer ! was then advancing on 'ali fours.* The j third and fourth shots were fired at random, as I couldn't get my gun any highej* than my waist on account of the thick cane. Thc: third shotr missed clear. The fourth tore off the righi J cheek. Still he reared on his hind feet ind continu'^ straight toward me. As he made a lunge for me, I threw up my j gun with my feft hand to ward off his j blows, and got my knife out with my right. Just as his blow descended, j learing my hat off, I dealt him a severe ? jtab with roy knife. The blow WJS limed for the bears neck, but when be j 7Qt my hat over my eyes, I couldu't -ee, so the knife took effect in his left j ;heek or jaw, breaking off ct- the hilt Seeing that my chances of escape were dim if 1 remained any longer, I decid? id to leave while the opportunity was i ?rita-ce,-and didn't wait long after de- j ;iding before'I did go.- I went, and raveled to the double-quick tune until [ found that the bear was going ie cn >pposite direction, then I turned ana j ollowed- it at a distance. I had but >ne-cartridge of small shot left, and )wiog to the distance caution was nec? essary. The bear crossed the creek, and j iras lost in an adjoining brake. j Figfct -in a "Triai Justice's omce. As soon as I looked at him I saw that he had no show, and I told kirr that it would not be honest for me to.give him medicine and take his money when: I knew that I could do him no good.' It was an unprofessional act, sir, and, just as soon as be comes out of that house^I'tn going to whale him.
