How- Washington Looked.
His- acse was very red that day, giv?
ing-me the impression that ha was not
so moderate in the use of liquors-as he
was supposed to be. I found afterward
that this* was a peculiarity. His nose
was apt to tarn scarlet in a cold wind.
He was standing near a small camp?
fire, evidently lost in thought and
making no effort to keep wara. Ht
seemed six feet and a half in height,
was as erect as an Indian, and did not
(br a moment relax from a- military
attitude.
Washington^ exact height wc:s six
feet two inches in his boots. He was
then a little lame from striking his
knee against a- tree. His eye was so
gray that it looked almost white, and he i
had a troubled iook on his colorless face.

Of course all this was changed 'when h

crops. It famishes an opportunity to j

.quite as beneficial 2s to other crops. i f
The cow tea is pood fer man and j -
beast. It is a nutritious and healthy i e
diet for man and nothing better can be : {\
found for cattle Be-ides this the vines i t
have excellent fertilizing properties. A : i
crop of peas will make the soil mellow j i
and enrich it, thus saving the outlay j I
for manufactured fertilizers which has j t
become such an onerous burden noon j t

There is always a market for cow ' [
peas. At present the ruling price is j s
not less than two dollars per bushel, i f
more than four times the cost of produc- ; r
tion. If the market was overstocked j fe
here there is always a steady demand at : ?
remunerative prices io Central and ' J
South America. Cow pea9 are shipped j
io great quantities to these countries j -1
from New Orleans and Wilmington, N. !

surprise our: people who raise only a :
few bushels,'?where they could profita- e
bly sell huudreds. ?
There is every inducement for our c
farmers 'o put in a heavy crop of cow \
peas. The soil and olimare are adapted *
to the crop. Its cult-ration is simple ^
and easy. It enriches our soil. The a
cow pea is good for food ard the vines n

remunerative, and a word to the wise . *

He Met a Bear.

C., writes to the Clarendon Enterprise
j the following report of an experience,
which wears the savage garb of a Rocky
Mountain tale :
About the last of March, ? forget the
exact date, I was in the Santee Swamp
inspecting timber with a colored man
whom I had hired as a gui?e. While
going through the swamp I came across
some turkeys, and in trying tc get a
shot at them, somehow, I became sepa?
rated from my guide, and wc must have
been fuHj a mile apart when I decided
ta return to our camp. I blew the sig?
nal agreed upon and took a straight
ooaree to camp. While going j
through a dense cane-brake, known as i
"Porchers old Seid brake," I came j
across a large bear's track, sufficiently
large and fresh to make me feel a little
nervous. I had a good four-inch blade
knife with me, and knowing that I
could not handle my gun with any de?
gree of certainty in a place so thick, I !
opened my knife and put it iu my 4fok* ;
pocket, for I really expected to comp !
across the bear in such a place. I hs.d ?
scarcely proceeded half the distance io
camp when, going in a stooping posi?
tion through the cane, and happening
to look up, I found myself face to face
with an enormous -beer. My first
thought was to shoot, which I did as
soon as possible, -for the bear was stand?
ing on his (or her) hind feet, not ten
feet froa-^ne. Three steps more, and I
would-have been locked in his firm em?
brace. I fired both barrels in quick
succession and began a retreat imme?
diately afterward. The canes- were so
thick that it was impossible to go fast,
but I did my best, loading my gus at
the same timer. Fortunately, it was a
breach-loader. After I had gone back- j
wards about twenty feet, I succeeded in i
getting both barrels loaded. The beer !
was then advancing on 'ali fours.* The j
third and fourth shots were fired at
random, as I couldn't get my gun any
highej* than my waist on account of the
thick cane. Thc: third shotr missed
clear. The fourth tore off the righi J
cheek. Still he reared on his hind feet
ind continu'^ straight toward me. As
he made a lunge for me, I threw up my j
gun with my feft hand to ward off his j
blows, and got my knife out with my
right. Just as his blow descended, j
learing my hat off, I dealt him a severe ?
