A few public meetings or fine speeches, or weil written edito? rial? may give an idea, or enterprise, sodden notoriety, bat time is required for im poises ?ad spasmodic efforts to develop into a fixed sentiment. When the temperance organizations began their work nearly half a century ago in this country, it was a mark of thrift for a man to own a distillery. The decan? ter stood oa every side board tn the land, and the barrel was generally in thc smoke Lease. There are many men now living who would work on the farm all day and then tafee their turn at the still at night. It was a very usual thing for preachers to have arno of brandy made, and the most of them drank whisky regularly. Some o? our , older people may call to mind certain j preachers who were in the ba bit of get- j ting pretty fa IL The most respectable , mes of the country reta! led whisky at , toe cross-roads stores, and their coos ? and daughters were none the less es- ? teemed on that account. That was the ? prevailing peblie sentiment in 1830. E If a man had then proclaimed, that per- < seas then living would see the day come, , when the owner of a distillery would not be considered the -highest type of man in a neighborhood, and that it ? would be discreditable to sell whisky, * even with a license, the multitude would nave hissed him down Bot that day bas come. The whisky basi ? ness is sow considered disreputable % is all its varied forms, from the block ade? who sneaks over the country with a few gallons in a very poor wagon, to the keeper of the most magnificent saloon in the fand. The seller of whiskey does not occupy the same social advantages that are enjoyed by men in other business. A man may deal in whiskey and be honest, liberal and even charitable io a certain sense, but ;r bis wife and children are made to feel the calling of the-husband and father. . Such is publie sentiment to-day. It say s church members must not make and sell whisky. It says that the de? canter must be sent to a dark closet. It says that when a young man enters ?bar-room as derk that he takes a stand from which beean never rise any high er. His companions must be whisky dealers and drinkers. His wife and children, if he have any, must associate with the same. The bar-keeper is not invited to what are considered the best houses. This change in public senti? ment has been brought about in part by . the women of the country. They have always been opposed to indiscriminate use of whiskey. Buring the last ten years they have moved forward with more boldness in this matter. They are organizing and working in their way and they are doing much to con? firm publie sentiment against the use of whiskey. The convention of the W. C. T. U., held here, will do much good. One of the immediate results is this ; All admit now that woman has a right to work for the cause of temperance re? form, and that she does not co OJ pr o ' mise herself by going into a convention and working and planning to stop the sse of whisky. Even those who were opposed to the appearance of woman on the lecture platform, now agree tbat she ? not out of plaee when pl ead?*. ^ for the cause of temperance. Much good has been done in our midst by the con? vention. Her work will aid materially in the development of public opinion against the indiscriminate sale of whis key. This question can not stand still. The temperance work is progress? ive. Sometimes it seems to have a re? trograde motion but 1093 will show that the people are moving forward. There is no use in opposing these women. They have made up their minds to do this work in their own way The i dle jests of bar rooms will not deter them. They are in earnest about this matter. I bored a hole of tho right size, bet the bar was rusty and the hole was rough. I made slow pro? gress, and was beginning to split the wood. Then I thought of thc oil can. I oiled the bar ; I poured oil into the hole, and a few blows of the hammer sent the iron into its place. The oil i bad not diminished rhe^size of the bar, ! or enlarged that of the hole. It had I only relieved the friction. It had smoothed both surfaces. A few drops of oil were more effective than many blows of the hammer How slow some good people are to learn this simple les son. They take hold of an important enterprise with great zeal. They are intensely earnest, and even morbid? ly conscientious. Everybody ought to see it just as they do, a?d whoever does not, is hammered at without mer? cy. Such uncharitable zeal provokes opposition. It excites all the friction of the natural heart. Men will uot ap? preciate the truth presented when they are replied by the spirit in which it is presented. Let the reformer be careful to have plenty of oil. Let him speak the truth, in love.- Dr. Babb. Noble Words. In the report of Rev. Dr. Tootner Porter's speech at the Triennial Con? vention occurs this eloquent and just tribute to the work of other religious denominations : 4Cburchman as I know I am, I here respectfully but earnestly protest against the sweeping allegations which have been made as to the results of the teaching of other religious bodies. There sits upon this floor in the dele? gation from South Carolina, now a priest in this church, the honored son of that Methodist Bishop Capers, whose labors and the results of those labors among the colored people as a Metho? dist Bishop, made bim a hero and a Prince in Israel, and on whose tomb is the bumble epitaph : *The founder of Missions to the slaves.9 Thc Metho? dists and Baptists and Presbyterians have done a glorious work, for which, thank God 1 Had they not done it, we have not, and those people would now be savages. . I do not think it wise or religious to decry the work of others when we have so little to show.* Mr. Spurgeon surprised his congre? gation *a few Sundays ago. He began his sermon as usual and got through bis 'firstly' pretty weil. Then, feeling rery warm himself, and seeing his con? gregation growing listless, he interrupt? ed himself with the remark : 'That is he end of the firstly, and iv's so warm to-day that I think the secondly and :hirdly will very well keep for a cooler Sunday.'
