Salters Depot, July 26.?The weather has been excessively hot the past week but it is somewhat cooler today, i Crop prospects are fine throughout this section and with no back-set from ] now on the yield will be good. The Salters Gin Co. is preparing to make extensive improvements in their ' plant for handling the crop the coming season. , Tobacco is being cured very fast | now and the season will soon be over. : Children's Day exercises were held at the Methodist Church here last ; inursaay ana were very uiycn cuju^cu i. by the children. V - Mr. J. G. Lifrage attended the postmasters' convention in Charleston last week. Miss Ada Montgomery has returned to Sumter after a pleasant visit to her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Montgomery. She was accompanied by Mrs. Montgomery's sister, Miss Martha Poag\ of Rock Hill. Mrs. J. Y. Mason, of Charleston, is visiting relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Tuttle, of Greelyville, spent Sunday with relatives here. Mrs. L. B. Salters and children have returned to their home in Florence after a pleasant visit to relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Sires have returned to their home in Charleston after spending several days with Mrs. Sires' mother, Mrs. Mattie Ferrell. We are dleased to have with us for i a few day$ our good friends, Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Counts. They are visiting their daughter, Mrs. A. K. Moseley. Mr. Holden, of Charleston, has returned to the city after a pleasant visit to friends here. o Studying Our Tidal Marshes. That tidal marshes and seacoast swamp lands can be reclaimed and made immenseley profitable has been known in South Carolina almost from ' the time the first inhabitants came here. For generations lands of this ? character were planted in rice along our coast and earned great fortunei 41 tin l-L. n lor tneir owners. vvnen tauvr wiiui- j tions changed fundamentally after the 1 war between the states, rice planting ceased to pay and many of the plantations which had been devoted to rice-growing were abandoned. But die lands themselves are as fertile as they ever were and where here and there a plantation has been recovered, ' as at Mr. Durant's T-Farm, and devoted to crops like corn and cotton the results have been strikingly good. The trouble has been that there has i loolf nf canitjil an<l a lark of expert engineering talent to carry ^ through many more such projects. ^ That an effort would be made to ^ take up work of this kind on an exten- \ sive scale under the new conditions J which have been brought about during g the past three or four years has been q foreseen for some time by persons f who have given this situation their at- J tention; and it is very interesting to * learn that an engineer who has had j exceptional experience in reclamation > work of the sort under consideration J is now in South Carolina for the pur- * pose of making a study of the pos- q sibilities here. The area of tidal jt marsh lands in South Carolina am- S braces more than 409,000 acres, so it ? was natural that the Coastland Recla- j mation Company of New York, should q look in this direction. Mr. Gerald 0. 1 Case, who is its representative, has ? had much experience in the reclama- q tion of tidal marshes, having designed j the huge works in British Guiana, 1 where practically the whole of the I cultivated area of the colony has been ^ reclaimed from the sea. j Mr. Case is to be in Charleston J through the present week and he ex- F pects during this period to make such * investigation as may be practicable of j the situation up and down the coast J It is greatly to be hoped that the out- F come of hip inquiries may be the ini- ? tiation of a reclamation project or se- j ries of projects which will put under F cultivation much of the rich lands now C lying unproductive. This can be done ^ and the time would certainly seem to (_ have arrived when the work can be 1 undertaken with assurance of success, F which is to say, with the assurance ^ that those who take up the work will j mnwxav nn tK?ir niltlAV. 1 There certainly can be no quicker way of increasing the food resources of this section than by putting in cultivation the thousands of idle acres which are the most fertile of all our lands and which, as Mr. Durant has ' proved, will make more corn and cot- J ton without fertilization than other lands will make with it.?News and ?
