I The illiteracy commission of South 1 fe' Carolina is endeavoring to remove the i stigma of iilliteracy from this state, i sad has designated the present week ? m "Write Your Name Week." Dr. Patterson Wardlaw, chairman of the commission, has given out the i following statements: 1 "Let everv natriotic citizen in South 3 Carolina help the South Carolina illit- i eracy commission in its fight against 1 adult illiteracy. 1 "You can aid: i "First : By securing the cooperation of your county with the South Caro- i 1 lina illiteracy commission. ' i "(a) Get your county superintend- 1 ?nt of education to employ a county organizer for illiteracy work for at < least six weeks this summer. The 1 cost to the county would be about 1 <150. i "(b) Secure the interest and co- 1 operation of local school boards or j trustees. "(c) See that suitable teachers and ' schools are provided where needed. 1 "(d) If possible get the county suonrl hnarrtc nf trustees to assist in paying the teacher, giving for every $2 spent in their county 1 by the state department of education for adult illiteracy work. "Second: Get list of adult illiterates from club rolls, from factories, banks, and business men. See these illiterates personally and persuade them to 1 attend illiteracy schools during August "Third: Write in making 'WriteYour-Name-Week' a success. During this week personally teach some on? or more illiterates to write name, age and address. "Fourth: Awaken interest in the subject of adult illiteracy among your friends. "Fifth: Report to the adult school < supervisor August 1, and September 1 what you and your county have done. A painted ship upon a painted ocean 4s all right enough in its right place and the ship of state may sail through moonshine seas without going on the reefs. And a ship christened with sea water might be in* good favor with Neptune and Davy Jones, but all the mermaids must be weeping over this new-fangled scheme of christening ships with ginger ale, sarsaparilla, root beer, bromo seltzer, the milk of the cocoanut or any other old beverage that can be procured in this era of kickless fluids. Ancient poetic ideals are up against this new idea of controlling all human habits, or of trying to control them, by legislative enactments and amendments to the Constitution. Christening the ship is now very much a go-as-you-please affair?go as you please to the juice to be sprinkled. The last Democratic Congress enacted legislation reducing taxes from eight billions, designed to be raised, to six billons for the firsl year after the armistice, and to foui billions thereafter; and there the total is left undiminished by our political adversaries. Two years aftei armistice day a Republican Congress provides for expending the stupendous sum of $5,403,390,357.30. We condemn the Republican Senafc for adjourning without passing th< amended measure to make rural lif< more tolerable. With respect to government serv ice, we hold distinctly that the rights of the people are paramount to th< right to strike. We advocate full representation oi women on all commissions dealing with women's work. The shocking disclosure of Republican corruption of the people has created a painful impression throughout the country.
