He has been in prison since his seventeenth year for crimes committed as a bov. i o I Anti Boll Weevil Conference A very important conference to discuss ways and means of meeting the "Boll Weevil" menace was held in the State House on Wednesday, January 21st. The meeting was called by Governor Cooper and attended by a great many Legislators from all over the State. Senator Alan Johnstone voiced his approval of the object of the meet- j ing, and pledged his support to any ' well planned method of procedure j adopted. Senator Neils Christensen, of Beaufort, where cotton growing has been practically put out of business, also pledged his hearty cooper-' ation. W. A. Preacher, a member of the House from Jasper county, outlined the ravages made by the'boil weevil in that county during the last year. He stated that should the same damage be done next year the people of his county would be destitute, and that they would have to call on the Red Cross for assistance. M. W. W. Long of the Extension Department of Liemson L-Oliege mane an iniereaung and powerful address. One of the points touched on by Mr. Long was the amount of damage which might be expected in this State during the coming cotton season. Sprott, who presided at this con- j ference, and who is chairman of the anti-boll weevil association of South | Carolina, called upon the farmers, bankers, chambers of commerce and all persons interested to rally to the assistance of the association by seeing, writing and wiring the members of their delegation, calling upon them to support the movement for the provision of this fund.
