Man, In Solitary Confinement Since

Boston, Mass., Janaury 24.?Jesse
Pomeroy, who has served 40 years in
. solitary confinement, is to appear in
| public for the first time since he was
a boy, at a minstrel show to be given
i by the inmates of the state prison.
As the latest of the liberties which I
have come to him since the solitary
feature of his sentence was commuted
three years ago, the life convict
will be allowed to take part in the
: show as a reader of his own poems.

written regularly for the prison paper,
his poems appearing under the
name "Grandpa". Pomeroy is 60
years old. He has been in prison
since his seventeenth year for crimes
committed as a bov.

Anti Boll Weevil Conference
A very important conference to
discuss ways and means of meeting
the "Boll Weevil" menace was held
in the State House on Wednesday,
January 21st.
The meeting was called by Governor
Cooper and attended by a great
many Legislators from all over the
State. Senator Alan Johnstone voiced
his approval of the object of the meet- j
ing, and pledged his support to any '
well planned method of procedure j
adopted. Senator Neils Christensen,
of Beaufort, where cotton growing
has been practically put out of business,
also pledged his hearty cooper-'
ation. W. A. Preacher, a member of
the House from Jasper county, outlined
the ravages made by the'boil
weevil in that county during the last
year. He stated that should the same
damage be done next year the people
of his county would be destitute, and
that they would have to call on the
Red Cross for assistance. M. W. W.
Long of the Extension Department of
Liemson L-Oliege mane an iniereaung
and powerful address. One of the
points touched on by Mr. Long was
the amount of damage which might
be expected in this State during the
coming cotton season. From the Representations
of cotton and boll weevil
experts, it was confidentially stated,
that the pest damage will damage <
the State to the extent of twenty
million ($20,000.00) dollars, more or
less dependent upon climatic conditions
favorable to the boll weevil, and

the statement of W. D. Hunter, head

of the Crop Pest Division of the
United States Department of Agriculture,
in which he stated that the
boll weevil would cover, the entire
state of South Carolina, and that
should climatic conditions be favorable
to the weevil, serious damage
would be done to the cotton growing
industry as far north as the counties
of Spartanburg. Greenville, Anderson,
etc.
It was determined to ask Legislature
for a State-wide boll weevil fund ,
and a committee was appointed to appear
before a joint meeting of the ,

the Ways and Means Committee of
the House, on January 29th. Mr. 0. j
R. Sprott, who presided at this con- j
ference, and who is chairman of the
anti-boll weevil association of South |
Carolina, called upon the farmers,
bankers, chambers of commerce and
all persons interested to rally to the
assistance of the association by seeing,
writing and wiring the members
of their delegation, calling upon them
to support the movement for the provision
of this fund.
Mr. Long, who has fought the boll
weevil from Texas to South Carolina,
states that this is the first organized
effort whereby all interests have joined
together in a combined effort to
lesson the devastation and calamity
of this pest.
