Letters Concerning the Fair. To the Teachers: ' Educational Day" of the Williamsburg County fair is Friday,November 10. Last year our regular school exhibits on Field day were eliminated with a \iew of having these exhibits at the county fair. Space for booths will be provided for all schools whose exhibits are full and complete enough to warrant the allotment of such space. The school desiring to make such an exhibit will notify Mr Geo A McElveen, Sec, that such space will be utilized. In case your school cannot make such ao exhibit, space will be provided in the Child's department or assigned you in such department as is classed in our premium book. In any event, please notify Mr McElveen what your intention is. The floats and parade will be one of the principal features of Educational day. All teachers that can possibly do so are urgently requested to prepare floats. Each school will form its own parade closely following its float. The association will offer a banner to the school taking first place in the parade. The judges will decide on a basis of 60 per cent for the float and 40 per cent for the parade. The number of pupils taking part in the parade will have no effect in awarding the first place. We beg the co-operation of every farmer in the county, for without your help we can do nothing. Of course the storm of July has damaged our field products, but we feel that we can get up a good exhibit. I therefore beg you, as one of the Field Crop assistants, to bring anything you have raised from your fields or gardens this year. Anything from a radish to a bale of cotton will be received. We are aware that Williamsburg county can raise anything that can be grown in the State. I Washington, D C, October 16:? On a Tennessee stock farm, native cows that weighed from 500 to 700 pounds each and ranged in value from ?12 to ?20 a head were bred to pure-bred Shorthorn bulls. When ! j from fifteen to eighteen months old j the calves were sold on the Chicago i market. They weighed an average I of SOU pounds and brought S cents a pound, or ?64 a head. I the elimination of the tick. Grade stock cannot be raised without pure- r bred sires, and pure-bred sires and the cattle tick do not live long in the same pasture. Usually the tick stays and the sire dies of fever. , That is one reason why the average value of beef cattle in tick-infested States is always many dollars less than in tick-free country. There is no way of grading up the herds. In the particular case mentioned? , it was in the days when Tennessee , was still tick-ridden?the stock owner was a big enough man to be able to get rid of the pest himself in his , own dipping vats and to import his ( own breeding stock. The small farmer can afford to do neither. But he has just as much to gain in proportion as the big man from good stock and he wants it just as badly. He can get it, first, by co-operating for systematic tick eradication work under State and Federal supervision and, when that has been accomplished. by joining live stock associations and bull clubs in which a number of farmers have the joint use of a pure-bred sire. If the regulations are properly observed, it take ordinarily one season to drive the tick out. Thereafter the way is open for stock raising on a scientific, profitable basis. This is being done elsewhere in the South. There are no ticks now in Tennessee and Kentucky, and only one corner of Virginia and the coast counties ?f North Carolina are still infested. Much of South Carolina is free, and about half of Mississippi and Alabama. There are large areas of free territory in Georgia, northern Arkansas and Oklahoma and inTexas. Successful work has been done, too, in Louisiana and Florida. In fact, | there is not a single State in the whole area originally under quaran-J tine which has not driven the tick out of some part at least of its territory. The people who have done this did it because it paid. It is not only the man primarily interested in beef raising who profits. Every farmer knows that his farm will benefit if it has live stock on it, but he wants that live stock not only to enrich his land, but to pay for itself and more besides. For the ordinary man the tick cuts the profits down until they are too small to notice; so he doesn't keep many cattle. To those who are interested in organizing a Federal Loan bank at Kingstree, as I have had several parses to come to me in reference to :he organization of a bank of the ibove kind, will say that I have not ione anything personally toward organizing a bank here, but from what [ have noticed in the State papers I feel that all parties who are inter?sted in it should organize at once, is there will be a meeting in Columbia next week for the purpose of finding out what has been done over the State along this line, and they are asking for representatives whereever the banks have been organized.
