The following tests are suggested by the Office of Extension Work, North and West, States Relation Service. to determine if jars are defective for canning purposes: Screw-top Jars?{ 1) Place top on jar without the rubber. Turn down tight. If the thumb nail can be inserted between top and glass, the top is usually defective. (2) Place rubber and cap in position and 3crew down lightly. Pull rubber from position; release. If the rubber returns to position between top and jar. the top is defective. Olaas.top Jars?(l) Place glass top on jar without rubber. Tap with finger around the outerjedge of the top. If the top rocks it is defective. (2) Wire bail placed over the top of cover should go in with a snap, even when tightening lever or damp spring is up. If it does not, rfrnove bail from tightening lever and bend to make tight. This tightening of bail should be done every year. Tobacco Destroyed by Fire. Salters, R F D 1, July 22:?Fire was discovered last night in the tobacco barn of Mr G Walter Scott, about ll;3f o'clock. One stick of tobacco had fallen on the flues and burned to ashes when the other was found burning to the top of the barn. Fortunately the barn had not caught, and after a few minutes' steady effort Mr Scott, assisted by Mr Ed Williamson, succeeded in saving his barn and about half the tobacco. It seems that Mr Scott has been very unfortunate lately. Sunday afternoon, the 9th inst, he and his family were driving home when the horses took fright at an approaching automobiletend ran away, thereby throwing him out of the carriage, which was almost splintered, but no one was fatally injured. The following Thursday and Friday the storm came and seriously damaged all his crops.and now nearly all the tobacco he thought he had saved is burned. He is depressed,of course, but we are sure he has the sympathy of a host of friends. A Neighbor. Should Sloan's llnlmpnt fin Ilnnn? Of course it should! For after x strenuous day when your muscle* have been exercised to the limit, an application of Sloan's Liniment will take the soreness and stiffness away and get you in fine shape for the morrow. You should also use it for a sudden attack of toothache, stiff neck, backache, stings, bites and the many accidents that are incidental to a vacation. "We would as soon leave our baggage as go on a vacation or camp without Sloan's I iniment." Writes one vacation: "We use it for everything from crampsto toothache." Put a bottle in your bag, be prepared and have no regrets. The man who respects the right* of others experiences little difficulty in securing the consideratisn due himself, but the wolf generally gets his due. Why Endure Summer Colds? Your 110S? 1v"* ~ "? * stops running, you cougli less and you know you are getting better. Get a bottle, use as directed. Keep what is left as a cough and cold \msurance. Twenty-two Innings. The longest baseball game of ths season was played Sunday by Rock Island and Hannibal, of the Three I Lt ague, Hannibal finally winning by the score of 8 to 3 in the twentysecond inning. The game was one/ inning longer than the record endurance contest of the National League, in which New York defeated Pittsburg by 3 to 1 at Pittsburg on July 17, 1914. It lacked two innings of equalling the Ameriean League record of twenty-four innings, the number required for Philadelphia to overcome Boston, 4 to 1, in Boston on September 1, 1906.
