JULY 27. 1916 Carranga and Villa, A great man}* people who lo1 peace seem to think that the situ; tion in Mexico is quieting down an that it will be but a few weeks b fore the troops will l>e withdraw from the border. It is one thing i think, but quite another to reali: upon those expectations. Let i look at the facts as they exist. A Mexicans hate the United State Carranza and Villa included. Ca ranza is "being good" just now b cause he wants to borrow money i this country and knows he can n< ? do so if he is at war with u Once he gets the money, he is the free to turn his guns upon us agaii Villa hates us with an enmity th; is undying in its intensity. He - without scruples and has sworn 1 kill every American who crosses h f* path. ' He is collecting anoth< large army and is defeating the Ca ranza forces wherever they are ei countered, while many of the lath are flocking to the Villa standan It is almost a certainty that i time Carranza will lose his powe which now is tottering, leaving Vil in supreme control. Then nothir will prevent the march against tl United States of Villa and his va JSy bandit horde, spreading terror ar devastation along the border in ca our troop6 are removed. Looking at it purely in the ligl of facts as they exist, can you s< i il even one ray 01 sunsnine in n ? f clouds that are gathering to tl south of us? It is more than v can see. ===== What We Might Do. We might have State-wide woma suffrage. We might encourage 01 women to take an active interest i the affairs of the town and rur; territory. The day is past whe women are supposed to have r minds above dress or the wash tu or the kitchen. Today they ai recognized universally as the ment equal of men in practically ever sphere of life. In many respecl the average woman is unquestior ably our superior. There the would seem no valid rearon why sh should not have an equal voice i civic as well as domestic affairs Certain it is that if we could injec the strong and splendid personalis of our womanhood into our publi affairs we would in time come to se avast and wonderful improvement ii local conditions. We need their ad vice, their assistance. We might try the experiment o indulging in praise and commenda tion instead of fault finding ant criticism. By commending tha which is good in our midst we migh unconsciously stimulate a desire in ; our own minds to improve that which is not so good, in order that it, too, might be commended and ? praised. The bitterest and most ? nauseating pill is rendered pleasant and agreeable by a little coating of sugar, and it might be even so with jj the rough spots in our daily exis0 tence. Every great ending has had its origin in a small beginning, and i, a few humble words of praise might e produce results .where hours of i abuse would fall upon deaf ears. . o James D Evans, a candidate for d Congress, makes some serious char ges against Congressman Ragsdale in his political advertisement in toll day'8 Advocate. James Whitcomb Riley, the Hoosier poet, died unexpectedly at his home ' in Indianapolis last Saturday. Mr Riley was loved by the people of Indiana as was no other man. The dispatch says: e_ Soldiers will use their bayonets to 'prod rubbish heaps, in search of n rags, waste paper, empty cans and jt old bottles; all leather and metal articles must be carefully collected. War economy on a similar scale, n patterned after the Germans, is pracl' ticed in France and England. There a-t is really no "waste material;" everyis thing, however slight, has a new ^ value; it is merely one of many lessons the war is bringing home to the people. Such rigid economy is indeed new r" for Great Britain, and, while it is i- not carried to the extent character?r istic of the German people, it is j bringing good results there. The li- I 1 war moiio is: opeeu up uu ecuuin ,M oray! r' It takes no argument to impress the present and future need for it ig on a warburdened people, many of ie whom h?ye patriotically brought their scant store of gold out of hidj ing and placed it in circulation. The lesson of economy,, learned ^ under such trying circumstances, will make for better conditions when it the war is over and the process of ee rehabilitation begins.? Atlanta Constitution. ie _ ie Colombia Wants Land Bank. fe Columbia, July 24:?Columbia has started a fight for one of the twelve land banks to be placed in operation under the rural credits law just passed by Congress. Each one of these banks will be capitalized at in $750,000. Raleigh, N C, has already xr begun a fight to get the bank located there. Authorities of Columbia n are convinced, however, that this city al will stand a good chance. Governor Manning is quoted as saying that he n does not see why one of the banks 10 should not be located in Columbia. Skin foods and face creams and powders cannot make a woman beautiful, because beauty lies deeper than that?it depends on health. In most cases the basis of health and the cause of sickness can be traced to the action of the bowels. The headache, the lassitude, the sallow skin, and the lusterless eyes are usually caused by constipation. An ideal remedy for women, and one that is especially suited to their delicate organisms,' is found in Dr Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, a mild laxative compound, pleasant to the taatp. and free frnm oniates and nar cotic drugs of every description. Mrs Gertrude Jordan, 522 North Liberty St, Indianapolis, Ind, says: "It is simply fine; I have never been able to find anything to compare with Dr Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. I started using it for the baby and now it is my family standby in all cases where a laxative is needed." MAY BUY DANISH WEST INDIES. Treaty to that Effect Will Soon be Submitted.
