In remitting checks or money orders j inks payable to THE COUNTY RECORD, j What Arc You Going to Do? J Well, citizens of Williamsburg, you have read the communications - mi _ r? 3 1 ' 'rp j 3 in me necoru oy nupjci uuu ''Taypayer No 2" concerning important changes in our county laws. The questions so far discussed are i timely ones and should not end in mere discussion. A mass meeting of all taxpayers should be held at the court house here at an early date and the questions most vitally concerning the welfare of the county and her citizens as a whole, intelligently discussed, with a view to having the county delegation urge the passage of such measures as will accomplish the desired end. There are no questions of greater importance to Williamsburg people just now than roads and schools. We need something better than the present system affords, and it is up to the taxpayers of the county to insist < ? <1 upon an improvement 01 tnese systems of county government through 1 their representatives in the Legisla( lature. All that can be done under existing laws is being done, and in order to bring about any improvement new laws will have to be eni acted or the present ones greatly changed. The Legislature will meet ' early in Januarj ; its sessions are, as you all know, short and far apart; there can be no better time for your representatives to take these propo sitions up for consideration than at the next meeting of the General Assembly. We believe they are willing to do it,too,if their constituents will only get together and let their wishes be known. What are you going to do? | - . Christmas Only 16 Days Off, /- \\ ith this greatest of all holiday occasions only 16 days off, our merchants are fully abreast of the sear v , son as is indicated i>y tue aavertising columns of this newspaper. Remarkable as is the attitude j which has been assumed b.v Germany j as regards the requested withdrawal ; of Captains Boy-Ed and von Papen, whose activities have long been an offence to the American people, the failure of Berlin to.respond at once to Secretary Lansing's request is not to be regretted. It affords an index which seems to have been needed as to how slight is the impression made upon the Kaiser's government by all of President Wilson's patience in the Lusitania case. The people1 of the United States want to know whether Germany is really desirous of provoking a rupture with this country, or at the best is indifferent as to whether she forces such a catastrophe despite the anxious efforts of Washington to avoid it. For more th^n half a year the demands ! of the United States in the Lusitania case have been evaded; and mean- I while Berlin has made no apparent effort to check or restrain the multiplication of offences in Germany's interest against the American Gov- f ernment and American institutions d and industries. This sort of thing J1 cannot be permitted to go on for- . ever. A halt ought to be called 0 now. If nothing but drastic meas- e ures will serve to put a stop to the kind of activities which have been in progress, then drastic measures " should be employed. ?News and Courier. ERNEST ISENHOWER ON TRIAL. Charged with Killing Deputy Sheriff at Wlnnsboro. York, December 8:- Ernest Isenhower, charged with the killing of Deputy Sheriff Raleigh Boulaware at Winnsboro last June, when Sheriff Hood, Julius Smith, a negro prisoner, and Clyde Isenhower, brother of Ernest Isenhower, also lost their lives, was began here yesterday and is now in progress. The ease with which a jury was selected was a surprise. This is the first of the so-called I "Fairfield murder cases"transferred to this county, to be called for trial. The case resulted from the tragedy on the court house steps at Winnsboio June 14, when a crowd opened fire on Sheriff Hood, his deputies and the negro Smith, while the latter was being taken into the court house for trial on the charge of criminal assault. At a subsequent term of court Judge Hayne F Rice granted a change of venue and designated York as the county in which the defendants should be tried. Judge Rice is presiding here now. While nothing in the way of disorder is expected precautions are being taken to the extent of searching all persons who enter the court house. It was said that no deadly weapon was found on anyone today. ENDORSED AT HOME. Cnnh Dmnf 00 Thio I'Km.lJ P--. i uuiiii nuui ao iii 10 ouuuiu UUI1 VllIUc Any Kingstree Citizen.
