Charleston, December 14:?That the problems of the South are the problems of the Nation was the predominant note sounded at the opening address at the first day of the jf- Southern Commercial Congress held 1 JL in the German Artillery hall. { f A vision of the South of tomorrow 1 is being unfolded at the sessions of | the Southern Commercial Congress, j THe recora or past acnievemeuus is being sketched accurately by men who know. All question making for v, the progress of the South will be | discussed. j. Drainage, rural credits, a well balanced system of agriculture, the development of industries and trade?these are some of the more important matters to be given at tention by the congress. Commissioners of agriculture from , practically all of the States of the ] South will gather in Charleston tomorrow and join the deliberations I of the Commercial Congress. The leaders in finance, commerce r ~ and agriculture are in attendance b upon the congress and questions af I fecting almost every line of endeavor [ in the South are being given close f attention. There were several hundred dele- 1 L gates representing many Southern ' P^v^Jlates and almost every county in South Carolina in convention hall 1 this morning when the Commercial 1 Congress was called to order by Dr Clarence J Owens, managing direc- 1 tor of the congress. 1 The invocation was by the Rt Rev William A Guerry, bishop of South Carolina. He invoked divine blessI ing upon the deliberation of the congress, upon the Governor of the State, the President of the United States and the war racked nations * j of Europe. Wk WELCOME BY MAYOR GRACE. B "We meet here today to forget , B secession hall. We are not forget ting the old South, but representing B the new South," said Mayor John P V Grace, warmly welcoming the visB itors. He referred to Charleston as H the capitol of the old South and of thp npw South. He was received with applause. V Lone: and continued applause greeted Gov Manning, who deliver ed an address of welcome to South B Carolina. Enthusiasm ran high in convention ball when the band played "Dixie" as the officers of the congress and speakers entered the hall. An interesting feature of the con vention was the large number of women present at the opening sesR sion. B The South's progress during the -past five years was told in facts and B fibres by the various speakers in a most striking manner at the first day of the congress. There was a very pretty wedding Thursday evening, December 9, at the home of Mr and Mrs S H DuBose of South Kingstree.when their daughter, Miss Mary DuBose, and Mr Benjamin Picquet were joined in marriage by Rev D A Phillips, of the Methodist chnrch, only relatives and intimate friends of the contracting parties being present. Beneath a canopy of green on the opposite side of the room a number ' of the bride's girlhood friends stood 1 facing the arch beneated which the ' bride and groom stood. The bride wore a dress of white tulle and lace and carried a large bouquet of 1 chrysanthemums and ferns. After the ceremony the guests 1 were ushered into the dining room, ' where they were received by Mrs. Dubose and Miss Amanda Edwards ? and served with a banquet. * The bride is one of Kingstree's popular and charming young ladies. !
