Mr and Mrs W E Nesmith went to Lake City Tuesday to attend the wedding of Mr Louis Nesmith and Miss Vernie Floyd, which took place in the Baptist church of that town at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday evening. The annual meeting of the Kingstree Board of Trade was postponed from Tuesday night, June 22, to Tuesday night, June 29, at which time a full attendance is expected. The meeting was postponed on account of revival services being held nightly at the Methodist church this week. Mrs Paul Connally and daughter, Miss Louise, of Atlanta,Ga, are visiting at the home of their aunts, Mrs Nora Murphy and the Misses McClary, on Mill street Mrs Connally! is well remembered here as the daughter of Mrs Samuel McClary of Williamsburg and visited here three years agot Those interested in the examination for Winthrop scholarship are here notified that the examination will take place at the court house Friday. Dr Isaac E Marcusson,rabbi of the Hasell street synagogue, Charleston, the past five years, has resigned to a similar r?hartrp at Terre Haute, "Ind. Dr Marcusson is well known in Kingstree,having conducted regular stated services here last fall and winter. He is a brilliant man, and his departure from "the State will be widely regretted. Governor Manning has recently appointed upon his own responsibility, Mr E 0 Eaddy as Magistrate at Johnsonville to succeed Mr W E McDaniel, deceased. This appointment was held up for some time on account of a disagreement among the members of the county delegation as to who should receive the ap? pointment. The party from Kingstree that attended the picnic at Mouzons bridge last Saturday report having had a delightful time. To our good friend, Mr Charlie McElveen, the versatile and popular Brother of Mr George A McElveen, is extended the praise of the party. "Charlie", as he is familiarly called by his friends, proved to be a most pleasing and generous host. Misses Ora McKenzie of Cades, R F D, and Walline Huggins, Hemingway,R F D,left Monday for Winthrop college to attend the short course awarded last fall for the best all-round record made by members of the girls' canning clubs of Williamsburg county. These two young ladies were decided the winners. The exhibit made here last fall by them will be remembered as a most excellent example of what a young girl can do if she has a little energy backed up by a little will power. The Kingstree Baseball association will open its season here by playing a series of three game* with the Marion team. The first game will take place this afternoon, the second tomorrow and the third Saturday afternoon. All of the players engaged by the local association arrived the first part of the week and good practice work has been engaged in every afternoon since their arrival. The summer term of the court of general sessions for Williamsburg county convened here Monday morning with Judge T J Mauldin of Pickens presiding for the first time at this place. L E Wood, court stenographer, of Sumter, and other officers of the court were on hand promptly, and notwithstanding the intense heat of the past three days a large amount of business has been disposed of. He did not deem it necessary to outline their duties as officers of the law and their responsibilities, as they had already been admonished along those lines. Solicitor Stoll presented the grand jury with twenty-two indictments, twenty-(yie of which were returned as true bills. Thesessions have been attended by large crowds daily s'nce the opening and on account of the hot weather Judge Mauldin was considerate enough to allow the jurors, witnesses and spectators to sit with their coats off. The first case called for trial was that of the State against T W Britton for assault and battery with intent to kill. The defendant was found guilty of simple assault and battery and fined* $100.00. Defendant was represented by A C Hinds and N N Newell, Esqs. Warren Thomas plead guilty to the charge of assault and battery and* was sentenced to serve four months on the chaingang. Ransom Wilson also plead guilty to a similar charge and was sentenced to one year on the public works of the county or in the State penitentiary. Ollie Scott, charged with burglary and larceny, plead guilty and was sentenced to four months on the chaingang. Henry Francis, charged with housebreaking and larceny, attempted to defend his own case. He was found guilty and sentenced to three years. Henry Mcintosh, tried on a charge j of failure to'support his wife, wasi found guilty and sentenced to three months on the chaingang or pay a fine of $50; A C Hinds, Esq, defendant's attorney. Dave Evans plead guilty to a charge of bigamy and a suspended sentence of three years was imposed by the court. The negro was represented by A C Hinds, Esq,who presented a petition signed by Evans' friends requesting the suspension during good behavior. Hugh Scott, another negro, also plead guilty to a chaise of bigamy and was sentenced to 18 months on the chaingang., Victoria Chandler and Ellen Chandler, young negro women charged with murder, plead guilty and were sentenced to life imprisonment. Upon being arraigned Monday these j women plead "not guilty" and the i court appointed Jno M Ross and J1 D O'Bryan, Esqs, to defend them. I They plead "guilty" when brought j up for trial later. James Scott* and George Wright, charged with the larceny of live stock, plead guilty and were sentenced to months each on the chaingang. David Pressley plead guilty to violating the dispensary law and was sentenced to three months on the chaingang or pay a fine of $100. Fine paid.. A M Miles, white, charged with housebreaking and larceny, plead his own cate and was found guilty. Sentenced to on? year on the chaingang. Defendan represented by Lee & Shuler, Esqs The case of the State vs Rosa Ful ton and Mamie Daniels, charges with murder, was of more local in terest than, any of the other cases tried from the fact that the murde: with which the defendants wen charged was committed in Kings tree, just back of the court house the victim being Morgan Fulton, i negro about 70 years old, and th< husband of Rosa Fulton. The cour appointed D Arthur Brockinton an( M A Shuler, Esqs, to represent th< defendants. Rosa Fulton was founc guilty as charged in the indictment with recommendation to mercy, which automatically imposed a sentence of life imprisonment. Mamie Daniels was found to be an accessa ry after the fact and wa3 sentenced to five years in the State penitentiary. Court adjourned last night. Rev Mr Ball To Be Ordained. Next Sunday morning at the old church of the Holy Cross, States burg, about fifteen miles from Sum ter, Rev H D Bull, for some months past minister of the Episcopal church here, will be ordained to the priesthood by Bishop W A Guerry, of the diocese of South Carolina. Re^ Harold Thomas of Florence will preach,this being his first ordinatior sermon. The rector, Rev W H Barnwell, and Rev R T Philips of Sumtei will also assist in the service.
