Government Investigators Find That Disease Is Not Contagious, j Savannah, Ga, October 25:?"The 1 Government investigators have come to the definite conclusion that pellagra comes from living 011 a onesided diet and that it is in no way contagious or infectious," said Dr Joseph Goldberger, United States public health service, today, Dr Goldberger came to Savannah for a conference relative to the progress of the studies and researches being ..made at the United States marine hospital into the subject. "Only those whose diet contains too little of classes of proteid foods, such as milk, lean meat or legumes (beans and peas) develop the disease," said Dr Goldberger. "The treatment and prevention are therefore very simple. Those who are sick with pellagra should be fed an abundance of milk, eggs, lean meat and beans or peas. If the disease j has not gone too far recovery is certain. To cure pellagra eat beans; to prevent pellagra,eat more beans." Dr Goldberger is at the head of the commission of public health service experts which has been investigating the pellagra problem. The result of their investigation is embodied in a report entitled "The Treatment and Prevention of Pellagra," which has just been issued by the United States public health service. He Got Them All. From the very day hostili- , ties opened across the seas, postalsavings receipts began to increase by leaps and bounds and withdrawals Pell off,a result quite contrary to the predictions of many well-informed \ persons who, in their imagination, saw lines of feverish depositors at postoffice pay windows anxious to again return their savings to the boot-leg and body-belt depositories whence they came before intrusted to "Uncle Sam." But the forecasters failed to reckon on the absolute confidence of the American citizen, regardless of the Hag that first met lis eyes,in the ability and purpose of the Government to carry out its obigations.not only among the nations )f the earth, but with the humblest citizen 01 our iana. Two important results have folowed: Thousands of people, large'y )f foreign birth, accustomed to send ;heir savings abroad,are now patrons of our postal-savings system; and jnormous sums of actual cash have oeen released for commercial uses imong our own people at a time vhen the need for every available itfllar is pressing. The growth of postal savings in :he United States has been steadv ind healthy and the system has filled in important gap between the tinman depository and the factory paynaster. July 1, when affairs were unning smoothly here and abroad ind the transmission of money across ;he Atlantic was safe and expedi;ious, there was approximately $43,)00,000 of postal savings standing to the credit of about 388,000 depositors. Since then over $10,000,000 of leposits have been added and the aumber of depositors has increased onormously. This unprecedented gain is the more striking when it is considered that the net gain in the last three months is larger than the gain for the entire fiscal year 1914. Scores Df offices have done more postalsavings business since the war has been going on than was done by them during the previous existence sf the service. The increases are confined to no special localities, but nave been felt in every nook and corner of the country. New York city alone made a gain in Septemoer of more than a million, while Brooklyn showed a relatively big increase. Chicago reported a larger ?ain in the past three months than for the previous twelve months. More than 7,000 new a< counts were cpened during the period, bringing :he number of depositors in that city up to over 21,000.
