Benson,March 23:?Spring is sup- # posed to begin about the 21st of I March, when the vertical rays of the I sun fall on the equator, but instead, I that day we were in the midst of ; winter and on Sunday morning fol- j lowed a pendant mass of ice formed t by the freezing of drops of dripping j water.hung from all trees and eaves of houses. On the corresponding date of last year the oat crop was prematurely grown, the farmers were grazing them down by live stock to keep them from growing. The tobacco plants were growing in j advance of the season and some were transplanted in the month of March. At the present writing there is a dearth of tobacco plants in ' this section, caused by the extremely1 cold west wind following the recent! snow. The few plants that have sur vived the weather are very small. | We have made an inquiry in this i neighborhood and have visited a! good many beds, and our opinion is there will be a short crop and very late setting out of the few plants that are left. Of course there are j j always exceptions. Some farmers; favorably situated have a sufficiency i L of plants, but withal, they are very j |j small. I mm Very little corn planting was Fl done last week, but during the re-! T< maining days of this month there, will be many acres put in. It has been an old saying among planters that corn planted in March makes i ^ the best, and regardless of "phases ar] of the moon," some corn must be co planted during this month.
