THURSDAY. MAR. 19. 1914. Volume XXVIII. Week before last week's issue of The Record marked our twentyeighth volume, the first issue of the paper having l**en published in 188o. From the date of its founding up to May 1, 1898,?thirteen years?The Record had five editors, viz: Messrs R C Logan, P A Alsbrook, E G Chandler, W E Cook and L J Bristow. May 1, 1898, the present editor assumed the duties and responsibilities of the precarious post, and he has nn for sixteen UiC'lICV^VV* w years, albeit at times, we are frank to say, it has been ''rough sledding." It may be interesting to review the changed conditions since our essay into the newspaper field. When the present editor took hold the plant?including office equipment and all other equipment? barely filled a little room about 60 by 20 feet in size. Now it takes 5,000 square feet of floor space to house the plant and there is no room to spare. At the time referred to we had from one to two compositors?sometimes none at all. We worked an old Washington hand press that required twenty four hours' constant labor to do the work that our new Cranston cylinder press does in one and a half hours. We have nothing left in the office of the original plant of The County Record save a few news stands and an imposing stone. Then, too, it is interesting to note the development of the paper. When the present management assumed charge, The Record had an actual, bona fide circulation of 628 copies, eight pages, "patent inside." Now, we run anywhere from eight to twelve pages every week, all home print, and the paper goes to eighteen hundred people every week. Ail this denotes the progress that - + liovo VUf iu\*u aim wuiuj u(v?v iiiiv.v, but it has taken work and resourcefulness on our part to keep abreast with the inarch of progress. There have been times when we were at , -our wit's end to pay the transportation charges on the paper and printing materials that were absolutely essential to the issuing of the paper. It is not quite so hard now; but we must pay the penalty of prosperity; and sometimes we think that we made inore real money in those days,when the paper was limited to a small field. For now everything I I in the way of laW and niaterialf and cost of living is soaring skyward ' and while,of course, the income de-j rived from the paper is many times greater, yet the expense has more than outstripped the increased revenue. Where we formerly had one or two employes, we now have five. Where we used to consider 810.00 a week fair wages for a foreman, now it is impossible to get one for less i than fifteen to eighteen dollars a I week. However, with a modern plant and equipment, we have been | able to meet competition, and usu# ally when we get a patron we retain him. For whatever success and prosperity we have achieved, we give the i credit mainlv to our friends and * j customers. We mean no mere idle compliment when we say that our lines are j cast in pleasant places and there is no place anywhere on earth for (which we would exchange our field, comprising Kingstreo and Williamsburg county. In this connection we most heartily thank our loyal subscribers, and especially our liberal advertisers,for their generous patronage and, withal, their patient indulgence of all our many short-comings. The latest fad among the ultrafashionable set is wearing shoes without stockings, the hosiery manufacturers not l>eing able to turn out a fabric flimsy or "cob-webby" enough to fulfill fickle fashion's fancy. Chat from Cades. Cades, March 17:?We are again having some fine weather. Dr W J Haselden went to Johnsonville Friday, returning Sunday. Miss Elva King,a charming young lady of Lake City, spent the week here with her sister,Mrs V E Strong. Mr J H Epps of Kingstree spent Sunday pleasantly with friends and relatives here. Messrs J R Haselden and H H Brown visited Lake City recently. Friday night a hot supper was given at the Carlisle school-house for the purpose of raising money for the benefit of the school. Heinemann, March 17:?Farmers have to "tighten up" on their work, so as to get ready for planting. We are having some very fine weather now and the farmers are hauling guano by car-loads. For the past 14 months the lawmakers have been talking about "tightening up the primary." It is always the man who gets beat who wants the primary "tightened up." We would like to have the roads "tightened up," especially south of Kingstree, for it will not be long before the next primary election and somebody will be "tightened out" and then they will go to talking about "tightening up" again; so the time to "tighten up" is now. Don't wait till the election is over and then go around saying the primary ought to be "tightened up." The road between Greelyville and Lanes is in a very bad condition, especially the swamp sections. This is what the writer calls beautiful weather, but not to last very long.
