CATARRH OF h Liable to l^tdecs CLARENCE COWMAN. fcw .i A Caw of Catarrhal Deafness. Mrs. Wm. Bowman, R. F. D. 1, Coon Rapids, Iowa, writes: "Some time ago I wrote you about my little boy, Clarence, five years of age. He was troubled with his ears. They were very sensitive to the touch, and he was quite deaf at times, ile seemed to be worse after catching cold. I had taken him to doctors, but they did not seem to be able to relieve him, and I was very much afraid he would lose his hearing entirely. He was getting more deaf every day. "I wrote to you for advice, and you prescribed Peruna. I began giving it to him, and can now say that he is Mi entirely cured. He is now wen ana hearty and can hear perfectly." Catarrh Causes Many Diseases. Many diseases are caused by taking cold. A cold is very likely to settle in the nose, causing nasal catarrh. It may settle in the upper part of the throat, called the nasal pharyngeal space. In this space are two little tubes called eustachian tubes, that lead to the middle ear. If the catarrh settles in the pharyngeal space it may follow the mucous membrane through the eustachian tabes into the middle ear. ir it aoes it will cause noises in the ear, and Hfe later or. be sure to cause deafness. IK Catarrh o( the throat may follow gK the eustachian tubee up Into the midWK die ear without causing much concern on the part of the patient The par4 An Appreciative Patron. ] A The following letter from a friend \ in Colleton county?a man of very i discriminating taste?is much ap- t predated, showing, as it does, the 2 high quality of the work turned out by our job department: The County Record, ? For instance, suppose a man can hear his watch four feet from the ear. If he loses his hearing to the extent that he can only hear the tick of hi9 vatch two feet from the car he may not suspect it at all. His hearing is good enough for ordinary purposes. He goes on without the slightest suspicion that he is losing his hearing. He may have ringing in the ear, or cracking and snapping sounds in the ear, or a feeling of pressure in the car. but he is not aware that he is losing his hearing. Testing the Hearing. It is a good thing to test your hearling with a watch. First hold tlj? watch against your ear, then movent gradually away from the oar and see how far away from the watch you can actually hear it tick. Try it on the other side and see if both ears are alike. If you find that you are unable to hear the watch on both sidet alike and at a distance of four feet from the ear, you may know that deafness has already begun. You should begin taking Peruna at once. Gargle the throat with cold, strong salt water, as directed in the "Ills of Life," sent free by Peruna Co.. Columbus, Ohio. Persist in this treat- i ment until a cure is effected. The Best Way to Gargle. Unless these secretions are promptly removed by frequent gargling polypi may be formed. Once formed the polypi or adenoids, as they are sometimes called, will require a long time with the gargling to remove, ua.*gling according to the proper metho. will sometimes remove polypi or ade noids. and no surgical operation i required. Hartsville, March 12.?South Carolina's well established record for big game shooting was broken last night when the biggest animal to be dispatched in this county in its history fell before the onslaught of a large party of well armed men. An exceedingly robust female elephant * ' ii... -i*. .i. u.. was tne vicum 01 uie anac* u,y tiwizens of the community armed with guns and other weapons. The hunt and execution occurred about eight miles from Hartsville near the residence of C C Winburn. The mammal was killed about 9 o'clock, after more than 100 shots had been fired into her body. The most violent excitement followed the announcement that a mem ber of the j ungle's royalty was at large in the neighborhood. Wild rumors spread telling of damage done by the big beast, and as they traveled they grew. Investigation indicates that no damage resulted for any but the unfortunate animal. News of the chase and death of the animal was brought to Hartsville by residents of the town who had viewed the remains. Tko olonVionf ia aunnnspd to have X1IU V.1V. pilU4J V IW w?rr escaped from a circus during a train wreck. The animal was first seen near the tracks of the Seaboard Air Line railway. The pursuers and defenders of the country's safety have not learned the name of the beast, nor is information of her history available at this time. Advices state that the slain elephant was the property of the Gillespie Carnival Company, which escaped from it3 keeper at Bethune, S C. The elephant had been bought by Gillespie from Ringling's Show and is said to have been perfectly trained and very tame. Its death cost the owner of the show $6,000. Editor County Record:? The enclosed copy is from the Rejrister of Prince Frederick Parish. It is by no means the earliest, but I think win De 01 interest; it gives us an insight into the religious and social life in Williamsburg at that early period. Yours truly, S A Graham. Heinemann, S C, Feby 26, 1914. prince frederick parish register, page 2. Prince Frederick Parish, Sunday May 2d 1756 Divine Service ended, the Vestry Men & Church Wardens assembled to hear the Letters read that they had ordered drawn & laid before them, which they approved and signed. The following is copy of those wrote to the Rt Revd Thos Ld Bpp of London: Black River So Carolina May lbt 1756 My Lord We the Vestry Men & Chh Wardens of the Parish of Prince Frederick in So Carolina, beg leave to address Your Lordship That this our Parish is now vacant, & destitute of a Minister thro the Resignation and dismission of the Revd Michel Smith from this Cure. A Gentleman who has not been long resident with us, but who in that short space has rendered himself quite infamous, & obnoxious to every Individual almost of this Country thro his tlagrant Manners and bad conduct for in 3 years (the Time he was here) he has done more injury to the cause of Virtue, Religion, and the Church, than his Successors can repair in many. We therefore put ourselves under Your Lordship's paternal care and Pro- | tection, desiring and hoping that Your Lordship would be pleased to appoint some worthy good Clergyman to be our Pastor, whom We should be glad to see and receive as Roon as Dossible. We hope that your Lordship will not take it amiss , to observe that this Parish is the largest and most populous in this | Province, Yet tho' numerous in In- , habitants We of the Church are widely scattered, and but few in number, The Parishioners being ( for the most part of the Communion of the Church of Scotland, and settlers from thence and the North of Ireland, who have two Meetings , and large Congregations so that this Parish above all others in the Province merits Your Lordship's Care , and thought, and requires a diligent, | grave and pious Minister to take ( care of the interests of the Church, ( which are hourly suffering & will , wholly sink if not timely and prop- i erly supported, for Mr Smith's bad | and irreligious Manners has caus'd Members to join themselves to other Congregations or to turn their Backs on Phnp/<h onH Divinp .^Sprvin> VU VIIV. MUU t choosing rather to stay away than sit under the hearing of a profligate . Teacher. Our Back Country is filled with Numbers who never heard the Word of God preach'd or saw a Minister among them. Indeed Mr Smith did make a Tour into these remote Parts of the Parish, But he had better stay'd at home, for the consequence has been that thro' his indiscreet Carriage, (We shd rather say immoral Conduct) among them, instead of bringing them over and joining of them to the Communion of our Church he has unhappily driven them to send for Anabaptist Teachers from Philadelphia, who dip many, and form them into congregations so that the regaining of them and making them Members of the Established Church will (we judge) be attended with great pains if not an impossibility, A Gentleman of Gravity, Virtue & Prudence will not fail of reaping a plentiful Harvest here both in Spirituals and Temporals?and we have a neat Parish Church, genteel Parsonage, Glebe, Cattle and other emoluments, for accommodation of niofnr Vnnr T s\rA_ I Wliat J uuitiuua au lino ia- & a vw* juivtu ship may send over, whose Salary will be One Hundred Pounds Sterling, & upwards, paid half yearly, by the Publick Treasurer, besides Perquisites, which may amt to as much or more or less according to his Conduct. A Minister's Income here depending much on his Carriage and Manners, We shall onlv add That the adjoining Parishes around Us are also destitute of Ministers so that there is not a Clergyman from Santee River to Cape Fear, to perform any Ecclesiastical Office or administer the Sacraments on any Emergency, so that we hope Your Lordship will take the Premises into Yr Religious Consideration & grant )ur Request, who are with ye atmost Duty and Respect May it please Yr Lordship Your Lordship's most dutiful and obedt Sons & hble Servts 1 All Clogged Up' Here A Simple Remedy to Correct lonstipa tiOD Before It Becomes Ctiroolc. Very few people go through life without some time or other being troubled with constipation. Thousands injure themselves by the use of strong cathartics, salts, mineral waters, pills and similar things. They have temporary value in some cases, it is true, but the good effect is soon lost, and the more one takes of them the less effective they become, A physic or purgative is seldom necessary, and much better and more permanent results can be obtained by using a scientific remedy like Dr Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. It does not hide behind a high sounding name, but is what it is represented to be,a mild laxative medicine. It is so mild that thousands of mothers give it to tiny infants, and yet it is so compounded, and contains such definite ingredients that it will have equally good effect when used by a person suffering from the worst chronic constipation. In fact, among the greatest endorsers of Syrup Pepsin are elderly people who have suffered for years and found nothing to benefit them until they took Syrup Pepsin. It is a fact that millions of fami-1 lies have Dr Caldwell's Syf up Pepsin constantly in the house, homes like those of Mr H W Fenstermaker, Siegfried, Pa. He said both his wife and daughter were involved. An exchange gives the following account of what happened to a family out West who was too stingy to subscribe for their county paper, and made a practice of borrowing that of their neighbors: "We once knew a man who was too stingy to take the county newspaper in his home town and always went to borrow his neighbor's paper. "One evening he sent his son over to borrow the paper, and while the son was on the way he ran into a large stand of bees, and in a few minutes his face looked like a summer squash. "Hearing the agonized cries of the son, the father ran to his assistance and in doing so ran into a barbed wire fence, cutting a handful of flesh from his anatomy and ruining a four dollar pair of trousers. "The old cow took advantage of* the hole in the fence, got into the corn field and killed herself eating green corn. Hearing the racket the stingy man's wife ran out of the house, upsetting a four gallon churn full of cream into a basket of kittens, drowning the whole flock. She slip ped on the cream and fell down stairs, breaking her leg and a nineteen dollar set of false teeth. The baby, left alone, crawled through the spilled cream into the parlor and ruined a forty dollar carpet. During the excitement the daughter eloped with the hired man, taking the family savings bank with them." Sprloo Blood aod System Cleanser.
