USE CITY NEWS, ; NOTES AND NOTIONS. BELATED BUT INTERESTING LETTER INTENDED FOR LAST WEEK'S ISSUE. Lake City .January 14:?The Bank of Lake City held its tenth annual meeting of stockholders yesterday at Boon at .the Halcyon Hotel. At 2 p.m.the stockholders repaired to the Halcyon dining-room,where a course luncheon was served. Messrs J C Lynch of Cowards, E F Prosser and J Davis Carter of Leo were in town yesterday in attend ance upon the meeting of the directors and stockholders of the Bank of Lake City. Mr Norval N Newell of Hemingway was in town one day this week. Mr Winslow Wright of Scranton wrs in town yesterday afternoon to look after a case in which he was interested in the magistrate's court. Mr Harvey Hand of Columbia was in town last Tuesday, leaving in his wake a dictaphone and its attendant unpleasant extra work for your scribe. State Superintendent of Schools W H Hand spoke Wednesday evening of last week in the school auditorium in a very edifying manner on the efficiency of our schools and the possibility of making them mean more to the community; he stressed the fact that if a school were the voice of the community, as it should be, it should have the interest and support; of the patrons. He also called our attention to the necessity of high standard schools, and this is reached by having the best instructors; teachers who make teaching their life work, not merely as a stepping-stone to another occupation or avocation. He also emphasized the necessity of Ibe co-operation with the teachers of patrons and pupils. An interview with our school superintendent, Mr T Cook Covington, brings the following facts to light: Mr Covingtonvhas been acting in the canaeitv of superintendent here for six years. The first year he taught there were only 102 pupils enrolled; during the six years the attendance has increased four times that number. Today there is an enrollment of approximately 420 pupil3. The first year Mr Covington taught we had only three teachers; today there are eleven grade teachers and one music teacher; the whole school property, including building, lot and fixtures, was then worth only $1,250; the trustees' report shows that the property to-day is worth not only four times increase, but twenty * i- i.i iL.i umes wnat it was men, mai is, approximately $25,000. With three teachers then, there was, as now, only a three-mill tax, which goes to show how much property has enhanced in value since that time. Mr Covington seems to think that with a five-mill tax we could then have sufficient funds to employ two more assistants.who are greatly needed at this time, and have the wherewithal to support the schools on an improved scale that has been suggested and through which better results could be obtained. The Farmers & Merchants Bank are holding their eighth annual meeting this afternoon. At this writing the meeting hasn't adjourned. A delicious luncheon was seryed to the stockholders and directors at noon in the dining-room of the Halcyon Hotel. On account of the large number of stockholders expected to attend, the place of meeting is the large hall belonging to the K of P fraternity. The cashier, Mr T J Cottingham,' and his assistant, Mr H F Fenegan, are both confined to their homes with illness. Mr B Wallace Jones, Jr, is taking the cashier's place and will conduct the meeting on his behalf. LBN. Wonderful Cough Remedy. McAlester, Oklahoma.January 19: Seven persons were killed and a telephone operator injured during a pistol battle at the State penitentiary here late today, when three prisoners with revolvers made a dash for liberty. The dead are: John R Thomas, Muskogee, former United - ? " ? r\ n A_1 States District Judge; u uane?, deputy warden; F C Godfrey, store house sergeant; H H Drover, record clerk; China Reed, serving two-year sentence for murder; Chas Koontz. serving forty-year sentence for murder; Thomas Law, serving six-year sentence for larceny. The men. armed with two revolvers, which had been smuggled into the penitentiary, broke from the ranks while the prisoners were being marched through a court yard. As they ran through the office they fired several shots at random, one of the bullets striking Miss Foster. Next they encountered Judge Thomas.a visitor at the penitentiary, in the corridor, and both of the men carrying pistols opened fire, several of the bullets striking the attorney and inflicting mortal wounds. Oates and Drover intercepted the men as they left the corridor and were shot to death, the prisoners continuing their flight. By this time half a dozen guards were in pursuit, and in a running battle Godfrey and the three men were killed. Ad Ideal Woman's Laxative.
