Several Crimes Committed With* In 48 Hours by Freed Convicts. Some day States will see the folly and futility of electing Governors like Blease, of South Carolina. Until then the country must chafe at the headlong spirit that still enables demagogy to keep its grip on the public imagination. Blease has brought his folly to a startling climax. Up to the early part of the week he had pardoned a total of 800 convicts, a record for recklessness in the history of American commonwealths. Then, last Wednesday, he shamed his own record by adding one hundred pardons, in a single batch, to his previous performances, bringing the total to 900. Of these hundred, twenty-six are men convicted of murder and as many more of manslaughter. Often it happens that a murderer merits pardon and parole, and that the community and the individual are the gainers thereby. But it is impossible that in this case | fifty-two criminals should have had a record sufficiently clean to wari rant turning them loose on society. The only explanation is a mental quirk on part of Blease that unfits ! him for the proper judicial discharge of his office. Two days only were required to demonstrate the costly consequences of Blease's perversion of the pardoning power. Forty-eight hours after these fifty-two pardoned criminals were in the full enjoyment of their liberty they "broke loose" in several South Carolina counties, some committing crimes worse than those for which they were pardoned. It is to be hoped the lesson will not be lost on our sister State. No more tragic illustration of official j unfitness has been offered in the I in rumnt vonrs ?_ [flanta. I UWUUI >11 IVVVUV JW. w.
