NEWS NOTES FROM SCRANTON. Dwelling Burglarized?Other Local Items of Interest. Scranton, December 2:?Wednesday of last week the residence of Capt J L F Parrott was entered by raising a sash, all the family being away. Money evidently was the sole object of the robbers, as nothing else was taken. Trunks were ransacked and $25.50 stuck to the thief's fingers, leaving a lone penny in the purse. A farmer living near town passed the house in question the afternoon of the theft and seeing three negro youths sitting on the railroad near the house recognized them as the same bunch he had noticed on passing the scene of robbery the previous day. Sunday he proceeded to work up the case and endeavored to make the boys "come across" but "nothing doing." Pressed a bit more one of the pals, Willie Mack, confessed that Sammie Welch did the "stunt," and that he (Willie Mack) tried to persuade Sammie "not to go in Cap'n's house," but go he did. None of the money was recovered, Sammie holding out that he did not get it. Meanwhile he is putting up at the guard-house awaiting a hearing before a magistrate, which will be given him today or tomorrow. His pal, Willie Mack, will be used as a witness against him and he may be brought in too. The third member of the gang, a younger boy, may not be implicated. This is the second affair of the kind that has happened here recently, $5.00 having stolen from the same house about a month ago. Webb Eaddy, who was cut by two other negroes Sunday, November 23, has recovered. This case was settled out of court, each of the assailants paying $10. Webb thought he got his share in the fuss and got off free. That youth desires entertainment and recreation these long winter evenings is evidenced by the number of "socials," that are being given, there being three in town last week, some in honor of visiting guests, others just for the "merry time." We are having some rain at present, which will settle the dust of several weeks. We hope that the editor's little daughter, Stella, will soon recover from her long-continued illness. Later:?The three negro boys charged with entering Mr J L F Parrott's residence and taking $25.50 were given an informal hearing today and a compromise brought about. Willie Mack, who accused Sammie Welch, (who has been in the guard-house since Sunday afternoon) with taking the . money was found to be the one who got it instead of Sammie. Mack, thus having the blame shifted to him, made good the amount and is free. This is the second crime within a short time charged against Mack, the other being when he passed a Confederate 820 "William" on aclerk in town. Two open cases againsti this sneak thief! I M O. He says: Yes. it is the climate, not the germs, that we have to fear in this country. The germs are present, to be sure, and are of some significance in diagnosis. Climate, a changeable climate, is the true cause of disease. The atmospheric pressure varies, the humidity of the atmosphere changes. Every day the temperature rises and falls. All this presents to the body very great trials to adjust to. The area of high pressure forms in tne norinwesi. .oioves u-jjiuij- svumeast, subjecting millions of our population to its influence. The result is, thousands upon thousands of people catch cold. A small per cent, of these thousands do not get well of their cold.. It goes into pneumonia, or chronic catarrh, or bronchitis, or laryngitis, or pleurisy. Now, what I am getting at is this. These climatic changes are inevitable. No one can prevent them. The very best we can do is to prepare for them, defend ourselves against them. Good health is the best preventive. The very best. Vigorous health, with excess vitality, this is Nature's own preventive and protection. We do not all have this, however. Some of us must have assistance. The assistance that I use for myself, would recommend for my friends to use, my neighbors and my countrymen. is Pe-ru-na. Keep Pe-ru-na in the house. If the children indicate they are catching cold, give them fe-ru-na. If the parents, the grandfather or grandmother, present those symptoms that are so well known which precede a cold, a few doses of Pe-ru-na and the deed is done. Some people are very subject to colds. Others who have weak lungs and are timid about our winter weather, take Pe-ru-na off and on during the whole winter season. The plan is a good one. The medicine is inexpensive. It does no possible harm to the system. It keeps the appetite regular and keen. It assists digestion and helps the user through the inclement weather of winter.
