"Only snakes and geese hiss," said Governor Blease when his sentiments on the subject of lynching were roundly hissed at the Governors' convention. The first time we remember ever hearing that expression was when B R Tillman used it at the Chicago convention in 1S9(>, only he luul it, "Only snakes, geese and fools hiss," as we recall it. Blease has employed the expression several times in his public speeches, showing that he is a close imitator of Tillman in words as well as deeds. The expression may have heen original with Tillman. Governor Blease avers that he was misquoted in the report of his speeches before the Governors' conference at Richmond. He has furnished the press correspondents with a verbatim stenographic report of what he did say. We have read both reports carefully and if there was any misrepresentation on the part of the Richmond reporters, we fail to see it. But, then, it is a common thing for Blease to fall back on the time-^orn plea of "misrepresentation" when he wants to extenuate his reckless and intemnp.rjit.ft -utterances. In one day last week there were three affrays in Greenwood county, one fatal and another that may prove so. In one "of the mill districts a bloodless pistol duel was fought before sunrise between S V Mills and J E Kennett, mill operatives; the next affair was a shooting affray in the public road near "Callison, in which 0 M Calvert was probably fatally wounded by Jim Hollingsworth; and, finally, the killing of a sixteen-year-old negro boy by a white boy named Zeigler occurred in the lower part of the county. Thrown in for good measure, a negro woman in "Taylor Ring", a negro section of Greenwood, was painfully beaten up by a negro man. Drives Off a Terror. XXX An indictment has been brought against John H Carter of Asheville, N C, former president of the American National Bank, charging him with the misappropriation of funds of the bank approximating 8100,000. Carter is said to be in Oklahoma at present. XXX ^ Mr A J Clark, who until recently was editor of the Lancaster News, committed suicide Thursday morning in the Presbyterian cemetery at Lancaster, shooting himself, with a 32 calibre pistol. The deceased was prominent in social and business circles and no motive is assigned for the deed. XXX Dr W D Crum, minister to Liberia and consul general to Monrovia, ana former collector of the port of Charleston, died in Charleston Saturday of last week. Dr Crum was the negro appointed collector of the port of Charleston by Roosevelt against the protest of practically all the white people of the city. ' XXX The sixth cotton ginning report of the census bureau for the season, issued Monday, December 9, announced that 11,844,432 bales of cotton?counting round bales as half bales?of the growth of 1912 had been ginned prior to Sunday, December 1, as compared with .12,816,207 bales up to the same date last year.
