Accidentally Shoots Himself While In Gfllce at Florence. <i Si Florence, December 6:?"Hugh Lawrence Stokes was the victipi of the accidental discharge of a pistol in his own hahds last night", is the verdict of the Coroner's j ury of in- ' -jri quest today over the body of this very bright and popular young man. 11 The facts in the case, as brought out bv the jury, were that the young man was in the office of the electric A ,?l light company, about half past 8 in the evening and that Mr Cahill, the bookkeeper, came in from Marion, where he had been to look after matters connected with the plant there. Mr Cahill took up the pistol that he generally carries with him when going home late at night, and loaded it; he thought that Mr Stokes saw him do it. Mr Stokes at the . *^jj time was playing with another pistol in the office. Mr Cahill turned his back to put the books and papers that be had brought from Marion in the safe, and later heard a shot. He saw Mr Stokes with the pistol he had . just loaded. 1'he young man stood for a brief period and then with his Jjj help staggered to. a chair and said, "Send for a doctor." He ran to the o door and hailed the first passer-by, and returned to the wounded man and tried to see where he was hurt, but the boy kept his hand tightly over the place. Several doctors came in a few minutes, Dr Smyser, Dr Allen and others, and Mr Stokes was hurried 'jg to the infirmary, where it was seen that the woupd was a very dangerous one. A message was sent to his , father, DP W $ Stokeu of Lake City, ^ who, with the boy's mother and brother, hurried through the country in ' an automobile, arriving shortly after 10 o'clock. The dying boy was conscious after the arrival of his mother and father and brother, and spoke to them. He told Dr McLeod that the shoot- ? J| ing was accidental, but did not go into the particulars. Other testimony showed that the boy had been in! crested in pist >ls a jood deal of late, snapping one at the office and playing with it, rather through an interest in the mechan- ;.j ism than anything else. Hugh Stokes was a bright, sunny boy, 19 years of age, sweet in temper, disposition and manner, and a gen- $ ?ral favorite. He had not been in Florence long, but he was rapidly . v*H moving forward in the employ of the electric light company, and had recently been sent over to Marion to CIO some oi tne wortc mat mr unm bad not had .the time to do and he bad done it well, and was highly thought of by the local officers of the company. He was a son of Dr and Mrs W S Stokes, and was born at Winnsboro, and had attended college for one term at the University in Columbia.
