To Fl Ali Give us a call a 2vfivOvCi MEETING OF THE RURAL TEACHERS'ASSOCIATION < i i GREAT EDUCATIONAL AWAKEN- 1 ING?TRUSTEES, TEACHERS AND PATRONS AROUSED. 1 Rome, February 10:?The trus- ! tees, teachers and patrons are man- < ife6ting such interest in the educa- i tion of the present generation that South Carolina may expect to be well i repaid for the money expended in i this great work of hers in this district. One has but to visit the Rural Teachers' association, composed of Johnsonville High school,Indiantown ! Graded school, Prospect Graded school and Union High school, to 1 fully realize the work being done in . these schools. The first meeting of 1910-11 was held at Johnsonville : High school. An interesting pro- 1 gramme was carried out: ' "Teaching as [a Profession," was ' well presented by Prof R S Major. He convinced us that the professional teacher would have to specialize as < the doctors and other professional men are doing in order to be very proficient. When this is fully realized 1 by the teacher we may expect a J great revolution in the educational world. Miss Florence H Stubbs, in dis- 1 cussing, "How Shall We Make the 1 School Grounus Beautiful?" showed very clearly by comparison how our 1 surroundings influence our thoughts and habits. She urged that the school grounds be kept so that they i will teach that "Cleanliness is next 1 to godliness" and "A thing of beau- < ty is a joy forever." The teachers were especially interested in Miss Edna Davis' paper: 1 "Gleanings from the Wofford Sum- ' mer School." She explained the great benefits derived from attending such an institution Prof 0 M Mitchell, in his charac- I teristic manner, gave a most practi- j cal talk on, "Discipline in the School I Room." He showed the necessity of (_ studying the pupil's disposition. Each : ? teacher felt better prepared to dis- ( cipline her room alter hearing Prof ^ Mitchell's views. The music by Misses Nettie Huff, Mamie Green and Ruby Little was i <. a most enjoyable and pleasing fea- 1 ture of the occasion. ; ] The following officers were elected 1 for this scholastic year: President,! j. Prof R S Major; vice president, Miss ( Ruby Little; secretary, Miss Mildred < < Cunningham. The second regular meeting was j held at Indiantown, Saturday, Janu- j 1 ary 28,and the following programme * carried out: i 1 Miss Mildred Cunningham in her! usual pleasing manner read a most I inspiring paper on, "Science of j Health." Emphasizing the Greek | belief that a sound body insures aI sound mind.she showed that diseases were spread principally by the com- j mon drinking cup, promiscuous kiss-j ing.the lack of proper ventilation and ! unsanitary conditions. Miss Cun- j ningham gave some valuable sugges-; tions how to prevent the spread of common diseases, especially in the! school room. 11 "Duties Commonly Overlooked by ! the Teacher." was most tactfully J emphasized by Mr D E McCutchen. 1 Mr McCutchen being a "model trus- 1 tee," his frank discussion was greatly \( appreciated by the teachers. Mr Mitchell has begun a series of talks on the mosquito, the first of J w-4 *? vs ^v*1* ^vr?ik ^*v>. *^v4 *^vsk v* v** Live Bin / 4-4 PAJ/ 4-4 BES' JLL LINE LADII so full line of Romj nd we will give yoi ? T A C K L E the series being "Man and the Mos- j quito." He described this great j enemy, the havoc it plays with man- j kind and explained that the elimina- ] tion of this anoplieks mosquito would 1 mean greater energy and a longer j life. , Hon B B Chandler brought glad tidings from Columbia in regard to, ] "The Attitude of the Legislature , toward Further Development in the i Schools." He was most enthusiastic on the subject of higher education ( and assured us of his hearty support. ( Mr Chandler having never missed a meeting, the association was honored in having him at this particular time. The association was pleased to have with it Mr J G McCullough, our j Superintendent of Education. The music, rendered by Misses j Green and Little, was greatly en-l joyed. II The following is the programme ; for the next meeting of the associa- < tion, which will be held at the Un- j ion High school the first Saturday J in April: ' Prayer?Rev T J Clyde.
