Colored, Accident ally Shot to Death by Win Brittor Friday night at the ojx>ra house while the audience was gathering tc w itness a sleight-of-hand exhibition, a shot was heard in the front of the hill and a negro boy toppled over from his seat to the floor, shot through the brain. The shot came fiom a Colt's automatic pistol in the possession of William J Britton, the youngest son of Clerk of Court H 0 Britton, The negro's name was William Scott, or "Pinkey," as he was Chlled about town. Being early in the evening, between eight and nine o'clock, onlv a few persons?some fifteen or twenty ?had cathered in the hall and ex copt for the scene shifter "Pinkey" was the only colored person present. The bullet, which was 25 calibre, hit lum squarely in the forehead, a litt'e to the rijarht, just below the hair line. As soon as the result of the shot was realized the boy was hurried over to Gamble & Jacobs' pharmacy and L?r Jacobs did everything p <ssible fur him. Rut the pour creature was beyond the reach of human sfcL1!; piece? of the brain were oozing out at the hole made by the bullet, and he died within thirty minutes after the shot was fired. On Saturday at 3:30 p. m.. Coroner Gamble imj^aneled a jury of inquisition and testimony was heard as t) how the deplorable tragedy came about. The testimony of young Rritton.who fired the fatal shot, was uncontradicted, being in substance as follows: The showman needed a "property" pistol in some of his ricks, which was why he (Britton), \ ho was to assist the magician during the evening, had it <>n his person, rie had the pistol in the pocket of his "sweater" and, being called to the front to usher in some ladies, was trying to transfer it to his coat v.cket. when in some unaccountable .manner the weapon was accidentally discharged, lie never had had any juarrel or unpleasantness with the !x>v and the firing of the pistol was nurely an accident. Several witnesses were examined, but their testimony threw very little light on the afTair. Young Britton appears to ;be shocked and grieved on account oi the accident, and much sympathy is felt for him and his parents. He is about 17 years old and the victim oi the accident was 12 years of age. After hearing all the testimonj the jury of inquest rendered the following verdict: "That the deceased William Scott, came to his death bj thy accidental discharge of a pisto in the hands of William Britton." Bad Bridge Causes Accidenti Local and Personal. And rows, N ovember 7:?Thursday > morning, November 3, one of the bridges across Johnson's swamp causeway broke in with a pair of '. mules and a two-horse wagon loaded :; with lumber belonging to Mr G W Camlin with A C Terry driving. The ' i mules fell into swimming water but ' were suspended by their necks with the breast chains and swung below, and the driver was even without a pocket knife. The driver finally ?uc| ceeded in loosening the gear and re- j , lieving the mules. They are bruised f and the wagon is broken to splin! ters. This is an awful state of af-j fairs. Those three bridges have not been repaired for years. There are two other bridges across this swamp -j that are rickety and insecure.
