There were two serious run-away I -v accident* on our streets last week! y and in both cases new buggies were smashed to splinters. Mr T R Tompkins. of the Cedar Cregk section. was driving a pair of young mules to his buggy when the animals to 3k fright at a moving train and ran away, throwing him out and badly bruising him.anu breaking his buggy into splinters. Now. Mr Editor, in reference to the Rett Washington case, which was f tried la>t week at the county seat, the charge being house-breaking and I larceny. At the outset I must s^y that here is one of the defects in the n law that pi-events just punishment being dealt out to criminals,which is why our good people have to resort to the unwritten law. This negro is looked upon in this entire section as a desperado. Before he was out of the State reformatory ten days he was breaking into j>eople's houses and stealing. This is the same negro who attempted to kill Mr T A McCants last fall with a pole and then hmkf? th#> dwelling- of Mr C D Pip kin. The negro's character was put before the people through your paper. Now he goes clear with two ' years on the chaingang and I will 1 venture to say he .will not serve three months <?n the"gang"before he will escape, unless he is kept in J shackles. He has a brother now in IHorida who escaped from the ' (Georgetown county gang. This is ' cited simply to show the leniency of our officers who should deal out ' justice to such criminals. If it were J jiot for the cooler headed people of \iis town the county would not have 1 b jd the expense of trying this negro. People here are disgusted with such 1 ei mockery of justice. When such 1 criminals as Rett Washington com f ' mit their outrages here in future they will be dealt within a different , manner. The people here put the law to the test: the way our crimi- ^ nal laws are being carried out is a howling farce. Mr Reuben Altniun, a noted local trapper, sold recently some of the finest otter skins that have been seen in this county for years. Guano hauling is becoming a daily task with the farmers, the railroad sidings b.?ing filled with tons of fer- j tilizer. Some of our small farmers are buying fertilizer by the car-load. The outcome of these heary fertilizer bills, fancy young mules and new wagons and buggies will be seen, in the coming fall. Passenger train No 2 had another wreck on the side track at this place last Saturday. No ore was hurt.
