Dwelling Saved When Destruction Was Imminent. I Tuesday afternoon, a little before 2:30 o'clock, the alarm of fire di-1 rected attention to the cottage oc-;, cupled by Mr and Mrs 0 H Patrick, in West Kingstree, tlie roof of which was in llames. As quickly as possible the two new chemical engines were rushed; to the scene and held the fire in I check until the bucket "brigade,",' backed up by "Our Pet," got into; action. At one time it appeared hopeless! to try to save the building, but by i' well directed, energetic work the.] house, although considerably dam- j aged about the front roof, was still haii table when the flames were put I out. In times like this all the popula- j tion of Kingstree present a united j front against the fire-fiend and it is really wonderful what the "bucket brigade" backed up by our fire- j fighting apparatus can accomplish, j The colored people lent their aid as < willingly as the whites and there I were individual examples of skill j and daring that would do credit to trained city firemen. Just how the fire originated is' conjectural. Mrs Patrick had only a small fire in a chimney piercing the body of the house. The general supposition is that a spark from the! chimney found lodgment among the dry shingles and the blaze kindled ate its way into the roof. Mr and Mrs Patrick having only recently suffered a disastrous fire they are to be congratulated that a repetition of their misfortune was averted.
