I HARPERS NEWS AND N01I0NS V Something About the State Fair- ! W Possum and Potatoes Coming. y HaRPBR, October 31:?The} writer had the pleasure of attending J the State fair and thinks it thei the best that has ever been held in ; -South Carolina. The live-stock j exhibit was exceptionally tine. I saw the Harvin cottou picker and have no doubt that this invention will Drove a success. The principle! on which the machine depends is | - action -created by fans. The machinery exhibits were unusually interesting, both for tarm and general use. And theu the air- J ship?this is indeed a wonderful j intention. It made two ascents a ! tiav, witnessed by a throng of eager I spectators. The new ideas and possibilities suggested by this marvelous mvention aught to stimulate the people in South Carolina to greater ambition in the mechanical arts. There were several hundred head of fine hogs and cattle shipped to all parts of the j State. I believe that our people i are awaking to the possibilities of ; >-old South Carolina and are be- j ginning to see things in a different j light. The undeveloped resources of our State are incalculable aud the lime must come when they will be .-appreciated. Air J W Cook, our popular and capable county treasurer, aud Mr Harry Britton, his efficient clerk, were iu town this week collecting (taxes. Our people are always glad * to meet Mr Cook. We claim him as one of Harpers' boys, as he used to Jive withiu a few miles of our town. Air Glennie Camlin, who is a stu dent of Kingstree High school, is at home spending the end of the 4 weeK interval witn ni3 parents. Glennie BlakeWy, the obliging tier's for the Rosemary Mercantile Co, is visiting friends in town. People in and around town are &uBy gathering corn, peas and potatoes, cotton being almost all picked. The potato crop is very tine; the writer has 600 bushels now banked and everybody remarks on the size and quality of their potatoes this year. Look out, Mr Editor, this week for that sack of sweet potatoes and that big fat 'possum. They will come as sure as the express traiu runs, (we "sure" will and whet our appetite accordingly.) Subscriber. Great Magazine Offer. The Charleston News and Courier in offering upou extraordinarily liberal terms, several clubs of high?rade monthly magazines. SP1 I SENATOR TILLMAN AT HOME. Talks about the Hearst Letters -Sorry (or His Old Friend Foraker. "The Archbold letters that Mr Hearst has read are the big things of this campaign and one subject of interest on the other side,"' declared Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, when, with Mrs Tillman, he reachd New York on the Red Star liner Kroonland from Antwerp. "Of course, as I have been away j for 8ome time, I cannot say what ^ the general effect has been from a * political standpoint, bat it is a most interesting situation." Senator Tillman has been abroad for bis health and he explained that he was forbidden by his doctors to do any prolonged studying of political affairs. "I see that he got McLaurin. I am not surprised. We were on to McLaurin in the Democratic wing of the senate, and read hita out o. the caucus two years ago. He 1 long_ with thecorporatioi.-contro a senators and we told him so." Senator McLaurin and Senator Tillman had a fist-fight on the floor of the sen at? two vears ago. * o U1 cannot but feel a little pitv for Senator Foraker," contiuued Mr Tillman. "He is an old man and is no worse than a good many of thereat of them ?in Ohio, too, I might add. He, of course, deserves what punishment this expose will bring, but I hope Mr Hearst will get the rest of them. "No, I will take no active part in the campaign. It is too nearly over for me to beslir myself. The last sessiou in Washington was the most trying I have ever known and I was , almost prostrated at the end of it. I do not want to waste any of my regained strength." Senator Tillman paused to engage in repartee with a Philadelphian on the tariff question and then said that he was hurrying to Washington for a few days. From there he expected to go to his home aud rest until his duties call him to the capital again. NtrTQHsness.
