^ rap TOWN TOPICS IN THRIVING LAKE CITY. A TONSORIAL ARTIST GOES WRONG?DR. CLARENCE ROLLINS WINS HONORS BERRY SEASON ABOUT OVER. Lake City, May 16:?Hon L M Gasque of Marion, member of the house of representatives, spent Wednesday in our town. Miss M M Gregg and sister are visiting Mrs J B DuRant. The Misses Gregg's home is at Claussens. Mr L H Atkinson, having sufficiently recovered his health, resumed charge of the Coast Line office last week. Dr Pate came over fi om Scranton a short while Thursday afternoon. Miss Bertha Morris closed her school for the summer last Fri day and is now at home. Mr A P Hatchell's barber has "done him one." Better say "two" maybe. About three weeks ago he secured a white barber from Baltimore, named Woodward, who is a splendid workman, and appeared to be a right good fellow, too. A week ago he got on a drunk and was finally laid up in the refrigerator several hours, but Mr Hatchell stuck to him, thinking that perhaps he was all right in other respects, and if so, his sprees might be overlooked. Friday evening, while Mr Hatchell was away, Woodward v j A a tlia \T/-?r+V? .Kminfl ? UUd 1 U CU un iwiiii vvuu? train. Next morning it was discovered that he had cleaned out the barber shop, taking razors, clippers, scissors, ?tc., and left the shop in bad shape. The value of the property taken is about $25.00. Dr Clarence D Rollins, of whom we made mention last week, graduated Thursday at the Baltimore Medical College in a class of ninety-live. Governor Warfield of Maryland delivered the diplomas and made the oration. It is now Clarence D Rollins, B. S., M. D. The day of his graduation Dr Rollins was elected resident physician of the Maryland General Hospi. tal, in Baltimore. This is cer tainly an honor and a distinguished compliment. To be selected for this position at such an age and out of such a nu nber of trained men is a matter not to be lightly passed over. After completing his term at the hospital, he will return South and establish himself for his life-work at some place not yet decided upon. He will come-home in a day or two alld rest up until June 1, when he returns to Baltimore to take ? up his post at the Maryland Hospital. The honors conferred . upon Dr Rollins are honors of which we of Williamsburg are proud, for he is one of us?a dyed-in-the-wool Williamsburger?and we feel confident that his wish, expressed when these honors were falling1 thick upon him?"that alikejkind and sympathetic heart that made my father what he was to his people will urge me to strive to alleviate the sufferings of those where I shall locate"?that this wish will be realized. The strawberry season is now rapidly drawing to a close. Berries are fewer and not altogether of such good quality as at the height of the season, though prices hold up well for such as can be gotten to market on reasonable time. Claims for damages for delays and failure to furnish ref ri iterators are being put in shape for presentation. The people who suffered from these causes are taking things quietly. We think that there is little inclinration to interpose uneasonable claims, but to ask for what is only right and just; at the same time the determination to insist upon putting the blame where it belongs seems fixed. ? : - -.4. l - ' Miss Maria crou is ai uumc from Alcot, S C. To-day there came into this: correspondent's office a young | man who asked for his girl yes-. terday. He came in panting,; claiming that coming up the! stairs caused this. The idea of such a thing! A young man J who has the hardihood to get married the last of June put out of breath by climbing one flight of stairs! This case is a little too much for us. Saturday, having been on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs W S Grayson, of this place. Mr J B Chandler is home again, after being in Georgetown a couple of weeks. Mr J S McCullough, who has been quite sick 'for some time, is improving. There have been several cases of sickness in his house recently, but we hope all will soonme well." \ Mr W M McCrea is recovering from his recent severe illness. There has been overmuch rain in this section during the past week, causing a set-back in farming operations. I Stands of cotton are all that could be desired and "chopping out" is in order just now. The weather conditions are better and with faxori able seasons farmers will soon eaten up with their work. Stands of corn are irregular, causing a good deal of replanting to be necessary. Mr J Y McGill aud two of his children are reported sick this morning W S G To Out-of-tbe-County Subscribers Hereafter subscribers to Thk Record living beyond the limits of Williamsburg county will be letjuired to pay in advance for the paper. This rule will be rigidly adI 1 . - L 4. ..11 v.., j nereu iu, so as 10 irtrai/ an vm puuuii alike. Our reason for making this requirement is that we have actually lost money sending the paj per on credit to out-of-the-county subscribers, so that rather than eontiuue the credit system we would save mouey not to send a copy of the paper out of Williamsburg county. When to the cost of printing the paper postage is added and the trouble of mailing in single wraps, our profit is reduced to so small a margin that we cannot afford to lose a dollar on non-paying subscribers, and the percentage of bad debts is considerably bigger among the out-of-the-county .patrons than those at home. There are many of the latter, often in other States where it is impossible to reach them, who will take the paper and read it for a year or two until a bill is sent, when theyjignore the bill and refuse to take the paper from the office any more. There are many old friends of The Kecord living in other counties and States who have taken the paper for ^years and always paid their subscription. We feel sure that they will appreciate the position we have taken. The matter reduces itself to the simple proposition, whether it pays better not to send the paper at all than to seud it at a loss. While it fives us much pleasure to indulge in the numerous enjoyments which accompany a lonjf vacation, still there is that strong attachment to our dear old school which causes us a sad feeling when we realize that the time to separate is so near upon us. Perhaps there are a few, as is the case in every graded school, who on glancing over their past records tind fo their dismay many undesirable pages. On the other hand there are many who have worked earnestly, and are now patiently waiting to be rewarded with a "promotion card." j The "essays" are completed and imagine the jov of the 10th grade! Much gratitude is due the trustees for their ever thoughtful kindliness toward us. They have given us another holiday that we might go on the excursion next Monday. A great number of this wise body is going and a merry time indeed is anticipated. Examinations have been talked of long enough, and now the time has come when we must enter upon them, earnestly desiring the sympathy of the entire public. sunons swings. KING jT,REE, S e. Dear Sir: But few of the men who sell the hundred different paints in the market know much about them. All Devoe agents have a state chemist's certificate telling just what it's made of; they know a good deal, not only about Devoe but the rest; we see that they do. We buy every paint, that has any sale, and analyze it. Our agent finds out all alnnit it. When we know what a paint is made-of, we know how it will act; we know how far it goes, and how long it wears. Devoe is the standard; call it 100. The hmt of the ivsr is about 75: tile woist about 25; the rest are betweeir. But the men who sell them don't know any better. They know what the maker tells them. That is: they know that he tells them. They don't know whether he tells them the truth or not. The business is not conducted on knowledge; the less they know the more comfortable they are. Yours truly F W Deyok & i k>. ])r 1) C Scott sells our paint. Winthrop College Scholarship and Entrance Examination.
